From what I've been told, the call center employees are making around $80k annually based on sales incentives plus benefits. That's serious money for persons with a HS diploma. It is not surprising that VZ wants to limit the number of US based call center workers.

People must make you feel really bad about yourself. if I was mistreated at work, I'd leave. That's what self respecting people do. The unions are the ones who clearly have no options and have no choice but to beg for things they cant get on their own. Stop acting like an abused housewife. The world is your oyster, loser.
You my friend are a fool. You and the rest of the corporate minions are the only ones that sat around making excuses not to fight the corporate monster and now you tell yourself it's to big to do anything about. If you were in the military you could apply to be the guy that yells "Retreat Retreat" But for now why don't you just stand behind the people with the backbone to fight that beast! this OP thinks it's his money the company is spending...instead of being a jealous prick, think of these good salaries helping keep social security going, of paying pensions to useless politicians, building roads and buying bombs...or should we just do away with the good jobs and take more tax dollars from the OP.
Western NY is riddled with empty call centers and unemployed small town populations who would take the jobs of those Union numbskulls in the blink of an eye if given the chance.

Man, those call center bots have really come a long way. They are good enough to do your job and Verizon will replace you with that technology. Don't you see how technology continues to quicken the pace of everything? Whether you cry and beg for "good jobs" the world isn't slowing down and its going to evolve around you and leave you behind...Nobody gets to hide behind a contract or dig out a safe hole to hide in. This is the reality for all of us. Those who cant keep up with the pace simply wont eat anymore. The unions must get this through their heads.. You're trying to hold on to something that wont last. Corporate greed IS a problem but its so big now that none of us can use old methods to stop it. We sat back while corporations actually became people and let them make our beds. We have to sleep in it now. Your strike cant stop this.
The beast is so big now that the only way to pursue change is from the inside.. Go back to work and be in the belly of the beast. If you want to fight the Lowells of the world so bad youre gonna have to get out here and compete against them for power. Aim for his spot. Get yourself in a position where you can make choices that benefit people before profits. Gain power and do good with it. That's how you fight. But you all dont REALLY want to fight. You wont put in that kind of work because its HARD. You just want to carve out a safe spot to die in by whining. But you dont deserve relief.

There are plenty of lower cost areas in the Verizon footprint today - upstate NY, central Virginia, etc, no need to go to midwest. The company wants to pay poverty wages to foreigners and avoid paying taxes and benefits to fund their Yahoo dreams.
1lur, Current Union rules don't allow that, hence one of the issues with this strike. Verizon's hands are currently tied because these call centers existed 50 years ago when it was all local phone companies, which is when these Union work rules on movement came into existence.
I don't get why a telecommunications company would keep a call center staff in an area where cost of living is so high. You don't need to offshore jobs to save money, all they have to do is route the calls elsewhere in the US. They can find plenty of qualified Americans in the Midwest that would be happy to make half of that salary, and even less if they just routed the calls via IP to home-based reps. You'd think a telecommunications/technology company would use the tools they have on hand.
Indian and Chinese CEO CFO and EVP make a couple hundred thousand a year lets outsource those jobs and save millions. Move basking ridge to mumbai
Lets get something straight here...... There is a big difference between the first level call center and an operations center with certified employees. Look up the average salary for being a CCIE or JCIE.
Call Center is basically Sales so each rep has a mimimum sales quota they must meet in order to keep the job. They them receive commission on sales beyond the quota so $80k is achieved by the reps who hit high sales targets.
Only the pompous tirelessly say that only degreed people should make money. Sometimes on the job training and targeted sales training programs are better for that kind of work. A lot of veterans only have high school diplomas but have been through technical training and team and leadership programs. Sorry your PhD's can only get 54K in your county but that's it likely because your teachers arent in a union and your taxpayers don't want to pay for education.
If the 30-35/hour is true that someone mentioned here - that's 70k a year (at 35) - assuming 2 weeks off. That's pretty good change.
80,000?! Read a contract to see how off base that is. Is it a good paying job? Damn right it is, because they fought to make it that way. They are treated like cattle and children, but they do it for their families and so they can live in this area (East Coast). Its $2 an hour in South East Asia and Mexico, both places sound wonderful to raise a family

Call center jobs should never be considered high paying. Starting salary in my county for a PHd working for the school system is $54k. You want a good job and a high salary then you educate yourself. It is disgusting that they make that kind of money with a high school education.
An hour. The call center which is a division in my work also CWA makes around $11 per hour.

Amen. Work a non union call center and you'll be lucky to get $10. No wonder they want to offshore.
