CWA Uncovers Massive Verizon Offshoring Operation in Philippines

VERIZON’S ATTEMPTS TO DECEIVE PUBLIC ON THE EXTENT OF ITS OFFSHORING EXPOSED; CWA DELEGATION SEEKING MEETING WITH VERIZON MANAGEMENT IN PHILIPPINES IS CONFRONTED BY ARMED VERIZON SECURITY AND SWAT TEAM CARRYING AUTOMATIC WEAPONS

Friday, May 13, 2016

NEW YORK — Over the course of a four-day visit to the Philippines this week, four representatives of Communications Workers of America who are on strike discovered that the extent to which Verizon is offshoring work is far beyond what has previously been reported and what the company publicly has claimed. Verizon is offshoring customer service calls to numerous call centers in the Philippines, where workers are paid just $1.78 an hour and forced to work overtime without compensation. Terrified that the public might find out about what has happened to the good middle-class jobs the company has shipped overseas, Verizon sent private armed security forces after peaceful CWA representatives and called in a SWAT team armed with automatic weapons.

“Executives repeatedly have claimed that Verizon offshores few jobs, and none that affect our members. Recently, our union was contacted by call center workers in the Philippines who revealed that Verizon was lying to our members and the public about the extent of the off-shoring of good American jobs, so we sent four CWA members to the Philippines to learn the truth,” said CWA President Chris Shelton. “When our members uncovered how Verizon is padding its incredible profit margins by replacing good paying American jobs with poverty-wage jobs abroad, Verizon sent armed guards and a SWAT team after them.”

CWA President Shelton continued: “Worse, Verizon has doubled down on its deception, claiming workers were on a ‘vacation.’ Let’s be clear: being on strike, exposing Verizon’s lies about off-shoring and being harassed by Verizon armed security guards is no vacation. Striking men and women from Massachusetts to Virginia are standing up for their families, their customers and to save middle class jobs for all Americans.”

It's pretty bad when the union PR releases read like something that'd be found on The Onion.

So these people took a vacation overseas under the guise of "outing" an offshore call center that everyone already knew was there??

Must be nice to do something like that under the guise of "work" while the people you lead are getting rained on walking around in circles with no pay or health benefits.

Wow, just wow.

So 4 people travel to a foreign country and get arrested for trespassing on private property while still in their car somehow got inside the facility and analyzed the work being done at the facility? Yeah right. The Company outsourced some Cust Svc work as far back as the MCI days. This is no big discovery. Pathetic bargaining update.

And btw, how can there be sooo many hardworking, ethical and dedicated company men and women posting on this board at 3 in the afternoon. Kind of like the kettle calling the pot black. Nothing in this world worse than a scab except a hypocrite!

So seriously, there truly isn't one comment here that's not a company troll. What this uncovers is the lies and deception that Verizon puts out. Also I am sure that some of this "offshoring" breaks the current labor contract. Stop trying to downplay what is a significant reveal. This just goes to show you what this company is willing to do to America in the name of the $.

Part of the reason the union has such low credibility is that every single one of these "press release" things are embellished and melodramatic. They sound like something a plaintiff lawyer would write if that lawyer was a fifth grader.

It's always the horrible mean company harassing these poor, innocent, pure-as-the-driven-snow union members. People see right through it, especially people that have worked with these union members before.

The union leadership are basically the same type of people who tell plantiffs to wear a fake neck brace after a car accident.

Union can't go to bargaining table but can go to Philippines b.s. want to go back to work ,if union really cares about outsourcing make a stand without keeping us on strike .This accomplishing nothing except hurting the workers .

Watch the interview with Low when he stopped by a picket line in NY, they called him out on the offshoring most of the centers and here was his response. We have a small portion of our dsl center over there. Picketers starting naming other centers that were over there and his response was, alot of things go on in this company behind his back. I call BS! They are looking very bad and untrustworthy. Apparently they think we are all stupid. Jokes now on them.

This is the effort going on to get a deal? Every large company in America has some customer service overseas. That isn't some revolutionary discovery. The way to change that is taxes and incentives at a national government level. A company strike won't fix it. Stupid.
