What made you want the layoff beyond the initial scope of money

Wondering if anyone volunteered who didn't get severance or if they offered you some type of sh--ty position requiring you to take it???
They like to bring in the union because it allows them to basically outsource HR functions and the contracts give them a fixed labor cost for however many years the contract is in effect. Plus, the CWA is lame and will basically lay down for them when needed.
ATO non-bargained notes: There was 5% RIF with the severance offer in August 2016 based on performance. That whole exercise soured me especially when it was said that the victims would be given top priority in job bids. Not logical, is it? That mentality of recycling the low-performers had driven me bonkers for years. Trying to lead project lead teams rife with low-performing and unmotivated management became more and more of drag over the years, especially when your own peer group was ever more of the same composition. I vowed to take the next offer and I volunteered for it in January. I sure am glad that it was offered and that I took it. There may be pockets of high-performing, motivated technical management, but not where I was for far too long. There is life after T! Go for it!
I just want to be done. They bought DIRECTV and are currently laying off as well implementing their team style. Say good bye to customer service. We now have union poking around all over and for the MANY years and mergers I have been through that was never even needed. What kind of call center environment must have a union representation? WHY?

I volunteered because the timing is perfect. I don't hate the company at all. Never have, never will. The company hasn't given me anything. I've worked my assoff and been well compensated for it. My pension and 401k are good if not excellent. I'm looking forward to seeing if my request is going to be accepted and then I will be ready for whatever comes next. All good. Now, bring it on.
I can verify the accounts of OP, my entire team does not care, our SLA's stay open as long as we can, no effort, it's just a paycheck, our manager is silence speaks volumes, she knows we al, go together eventually
I volunteered in one of the earlier rounds because I knew I was underpaid and being forced to do work that was essentially data entry. There was also no hope for advancement as my manager was generally just not very good and had silod our group off from everyone else and made us very non-essential. Basically, I saw the writing on the wall and just needed out. It was the best decision I ever made.
I imagine if you have reasonable or apathetic management, it's ok, but mine was so incompetent it was actually destroying the careers of people.
Not going to volunteer but can see a myriad of reasons why someone would make that call.
Some of the reasons why I considered it though we're a fresh start somewhere, forced change, a nice chunk of cash, the desire to leave an environment where this will likely be the norm going forward.
Why I'm not taking it, reality of finding another job and the process that goes along with that, comfort level and known benefits.
Unlike like a lot of the trolls here I don't think the company is terrible, maybe I've just been lucky in my career and had good leadership. There are complaints of course but it's all relative. I know people who have left and flourished, people who have left and wished they hadn't.
I'm prepared either way, I just want it to all be over.
I volunteered back in March and was chosen (my reviews for 5 years were exceeds and fully meets never below). But I never shared it even with my direct manager, who asked to be included in my decision.
for me I was done. I had checked out mentally months ago. I had read on these boards that people were finding better jobs and/or starting side hustles/businesses. I've been reading nearly 87% of the entire workforce today are not engaged in their work. To that end, I was apart of the cultural problem everyone writes about here...chicken or egg, probably doesn't matter. But good culture affects employee and employer bottom line by 65 % for the latter.
Fast forward I found a better job (30% more pay) in about 45 days. And left with a nice cushion plus bonus. People ask why volunteer?? Part is mindset. I had been doing mind numbing soul crushing work. But I also believed I was worth more and could do more. Turns out I was right.
