Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Lowell to spend 1 BILLION on strike?

our most recent channel checks indicate a growing concern that the strike from Verizon Communications’ (ticker: VZ ) wireline unions -- which is drawing away resources from even the company’s wireless operations -- may also be impacting the pace at which the nation’s largest carrier is able to deploy capital.

So VZ spent 2.2 Billion on wireless last quarter/last year?? And now Lowell will spend up to 1 BILLION according to people posting on here... Really???

I can think of better ways to flush $1 Billion down the toilet but I'm giving too much credit to the genius who spent $4.4 Billion on AOL, God knows what on Yahoo, and $5 Billion buying back his own stock to give the illusion of higher value.

Between all the years of planning, and training, and now implementing. He's spent 3/4 of it already. The results are coming in everyday.....failure. It's just too bad he didn't budget the 2 Billion.

I can see that. They've realized that they have to crush the unions to make the wireline operations viable, much like Murdoch once did with the print unions. Telecoms is now a mature market and a commodity service - they need to be able to compete on service and price, and they can't do that with an aggressive union in the way. They played it too strong and he's called their bluff.
