Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

H1B workers are foreign workers hired for a specific job. The corporations are claiming that they do not have enough tech workers. Legally speaking, they are not supposed to be used to replace American workers that have been rifd. The H1Bs cannot easily change jobs so they are pretty much stuck in the job where they placed no matter how much free overtime is required. Many companies are laying off the older high cost workers and dumping their work on the remaining lucky souls now working tons of free overtime doing the jobs of the rifd and their own. They are in their 50's and 60's and are not quite ready to retire since they do not have pensions in many cases, only 401ks that were trashed in 2008 when the market crashed. They see the H1B workers and overseas workers being slipped in to place and learning their jobs. So there is a sense of dread for high cost employees each time rumors of a layoff surface. Like the chickens in a barnyard, they know every Sunday somebody is going to disappear unless they are the farmer's pet or the rooster keeping the chickens rounded up -and last time even some of the roosters went into the pot.

The new H1's are to replace Lowell and his motly crue of scallywags, and all the myriad vps managers ,etc. They will be flying in to JFK next week and the Verizon management will train their replacements before being laid off

I pray for a RIF but so far, 2 Ewa's and 16 yrs and I can't seem to get on that Damn list. I will have to volunteer when I get back. I have been treated fine up until now. I don't care for how this is playing out, so I will look for another company without Union workers when I am done. Not sure why they did not just hire contractors at the start.

@HlBCvpA-zib Hb1? The original poster was addressing H1b. I think you're confused.

HB1s are typically to replace lower end basic labor types of jobs like the union jobs. The positions that require college degrees and are higher level are typically not what HB1s are hired for.

More directly, HB1s aren't for Band 5/6 type jobs.

Since it is unstoppable, why bring it up. With a RIF comes 2 weeks paid per year of service, plus all the tons of EWA cash, plus unemployment. No worries. RIFs are SOP when working for verizon.

Worst case, i will use my new found love of working outside to get a construction job. I hear Trump needs help building a wall next year.
