Verizon Strike: Customers Report 'Nightmare' Service Delays

Editor's Note: This article is part of an ongoing series. Catch up on the latest news about the Verizon strike here.

May 11, 2016 – When almost 40,000 Verizon employees went on strike last month, touching off one of the largest labor actions in recent United States history, many of the company’s customers were left wondering how it would affect their service.

As the strike approaches its fifth week, some now have answers to that question: service has gotten worse.

I can guarantee you that not ONE customer I've spoken to during the strike mentions anything positive towards the union. To the very, very few that were even aware of the strike, it's a non issue and they couldn't believe how helpful, friendly, and knowledgeable we are while filling in. Otherwise, it's business as usual. And I've now spoken to hundreds and hundreds of customers, and not one time have I received any comment that even remotely resembles support for the union. I know, I know, the union will say that's a lie, it's just a management speaking point, etc, but I'm giving you the real story from a real experience. Like it or not, that's how it is folks.

"scaring customers does nothing to engender sympathy for the union."

But we aren't scaring customers, we are gaining their sympathy and understanding by laying out the facts of what this company is trying to do as far as job security/outsourcing/keeping jobs in the US while Verizon wants to hire more foreigners that the customer cant under stand to take their calls among many other issues we are striking over. I hate to say it, hardly any American customers want to speak to someone that barely speaks any English and can't help them in the process. Also, many customers are growing sick and tired of the excessive corporate greed that plagues corporate america and they tell us all the time that they hope we (the union) wins.

The fact that story is in the Montclair,NJ paper is important. Montclair is home to thousands of NYC movers and shakers. Journalists, bankers ceo's tv stars movie stars baseball basketball football superstars live there. They are the people we need talking about this strike.

@RTX- you do realize that Verizon wireless has call centers and an online presence, right? Those customers you scare away are just going to other channels. These other channels save the company money as well. So, really, you’re not hurting sales.

What you are doing is proving that Verizon does not need stores, or the employees manning them. You, know, the ones the union is trying to unionize.

Also, scaring customers does nothing to engender sympathy for the union.

36,000 people will be in financial ruin and Vz stock might be down a few points. Great plan to stick it to the company. They are global now, revenue from 150+ countries worldwide. This isn't 1989. From an investment perspective, Vz has a very diverse portfolio now.

The 1989 strike took its toll because it lasted 4 months. Short strikes usually don't affect stock price but a longer strike will. When next quarters numbers come out and they show a loss of subscribers, etc then you will see.

They can release all the postive press releases they want but when the actual figures are released its going to be hard to sugar coat that

The 1989 nynex strike - it took its toll on the company for a few years after that

@dtn, customers will see the connection between wireline and wireless in regards to the strike as we picket in front of the Verizon Wireless stores, and we are driving their revenue down, so its making an impact, simple

@AOE- that may be. I think you’re missing the point, though. The point is customer perception. Customers do not see a connection between wireless and wireline. even if customers see a degradation in their wireless service, the will not associate it with the strike (especially since most don’t even realize it’s happening). When you look at the big picture, sadly, the strike is simply not generating public sympathy on a scale necessary to have an effect.

@BVP- it doesn't matter.... the customer doesn't know or care that any part of the cell network includes fiber. therefore, they do not care that the wireline unions are on strike.

if a tree falls in a forest and there's nobody to hear, does it make a sound?

Verizon doesn't give a sh-- about these customers or the poor work being done by the EWAs. All blame is shifted to the union.

Without wireline, there is no wireless...Those magical cell towers don't run themselves you know...Customers should be concerned.

No sh--s given indeed. I have friends across the US What follows is the conversation I’ve had with all of them not in the Northeast or Midatlantic:

Me- There’s a Vz wireline strike.

Friend- is that affecting their cell phones?

Me- No.

Friend- Whew!

Here’s the conversation I have with my friends in the Northeast or Midatlantic:

Me- There’s a Vz wireline strike.

Friend- yeah, I was wondering… every once in a while I pass a little group of them yelling about God knows what.

In either case, IF the conversation continues into what the issues of contention are, there is no sympathy for the union.

I actually feel sad. It’s like the little kid trying to get their mother’s attention while mom is occupied with something else (mom! Mom! Ma! Ma! Ma! Hey ma! Lookit this! Ma! Ma! Mooooooooooooooom!)

I know they feel like they gotta do what they gotta do, but when do you figure ut taking care of your family is the most important?

This doesn't matter. Web article on a local website. Big deal.

Where are the political figures that support you? Not seeing them in the media.

Where are your union bosses? They should be holding presses conferences. Their should be daily PR wires.

Screaming and disrupting is not how you gain public support and sympathy to put pressure on the company. Here's the deal. There is no political or public pressure that vz has is going to change there minds.

If you perform a meta search on this strike the most prevelant returns are on sabotage.

Reality is...no sh--s are given
