Would these contracting jobs require travel?
The sad thing is that many of us who used the TA to the fullest are now more educated than the knuckle heads running this company. Marc Greed and his "deer in the headlights" stare looks like he barely has two brain cells to rub together and only has a BA from SUNY Buffalo.
My splicer (as a contractor) cleared 140k last year. He even hired a splicer helper out of his own payroll. Does that anwser your question?

You can work for yourself as independent contractor and make even more. Or you can look into others like Duda cable, fcsi,ACI, figure 8, todd cable just to name a few. They all do outside plant aerial buried lineman work and splicing. (Western pa area)
Im not talking about IT jobs, they're everywhere. I'm talking about Outside Plant jobs. Where else you gonna rack a man hole or splice fiber for $35 an hour in your hometown?
Only 15 years at Verizon but smart enough to take the free tuition assistance. I will be graduating from Strayer in a few weeks with my Bachelors in IT (Internetworking). I was looking to move up in the company, but not now. So I'll be looking elsewhere.
I am very happy to see that there are so many highly educated associated working as technicians; this strike might just be the nudge needed to seek employment more inline with your education level. For those with Master level degrees; I suggest using sites such as The Ladders or Glass Door, stay away from Monster as they are mostly entry level positions; which would be far below what your education and training warrant...
I did and i went. Still in the same field just dont have to go into peoples filthy homes anymore. Op you fail to realize that verizon is not the only employer out there doing networking. Leaving verizon is not end of the world. Vz is just a big bully in the telecom industry, along with ATT

Many of us have an MBA, CPA, Engineering/IT degree which aren't industry specific. So with your same skill set you could work in any number of industries. Many of us already have spent many years in various industries.

Anywhere my Electrical Engineering degree allows me to.. Unless another American Corporation wants to hire an h1b1 instead. Cause nothing is better or cheaper than legalized indentured servitude.
Finance, airline, ecommerce industries. Analytic skills are highly marketable.
