Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Reading this to me its blatantly clear that neither side is at fault. I think the bottom line is that the cost of doing business in the United States of America is too pricey for most businesses, hence the off shoring. The bottom line of any business is to keep the stock price going up, not stagnant so CEOs will do what they need to to make this happen. On the other side of this, we have the American worker caught in the middle. When you look at both sides, you can see where it's impossible to make both sides happy. Businesses choose to make their investors happy.

This can be fixed by asking our government to look at our trade agreements, tariffs and taxes. It all starts there. Once its cheaper to do business in the US you will see less of what you are seeing these days with layoffs. The argument to punish companies for off shoring jobs will just cause them to relocate off shore to a country that won't do this, hence all the jobs will be gone. It's a very dicey situation for all.

The argument I see is that Verizon make XX billions of dollars however from an accounting standpoint. Verizon wireless and wireline are completely separate companies under the umbrella organization so they are not counted together. Taxes are done completely different. Different payrolls etc etc. Companies will look to cut what is not profitable. It is really just as simple as that.

I have family members who are linemen and I do not envy them of the situations they go into. I have a lot of respect for anyone out in the elements doing the job everyday. My hat is off to you but eventually, like all jobs that exist today, they will no longer be needed. In 50 years, the things we do today will be antiquated and old and non existence, just like the payphone. It's unfortunate but it's the way things work. Innovation overwrites previous technologies.

OP you are not in the Union so mind your own business. Worry about polishing your bosses' shoes or whatever people like you do. Who cares about you or what you think?

I work for AT&T in SAN bernardino, CA, union does not care about members, AT&T will not give additional concessions to the union, so they will settle for whatever they can get, and somehow the contract will be approved by 1or 2 % majority,, as the South East and wEst contracts, the whole thing is rigged

jmj @brm I said nothing about physical infrastructure work (splicing/FIOS installs). Was responding to OP about getting "digital skills". As far as your comment about who would come work for VZ in the field/ COs from aborad, then look no further than the next country south. Those jobs need to remain with the current Union but the problem I see is VZ won't build out FIOS like they did the copper network.

Please explain to me how one off-shores a cable splicer or a FiOS installer...as for H1B folks, good luck finding anyone with the necessary skills to do that type of work who'd actually be willing to come to this country and work for VZ in the field/CO...

What trolls like yourselves fail to admit is the fact that telecom field/CO employees are pretty-well-paid worldwide...
