Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Why isn't Union fighting for backpay/ratification bonus/profit sharing for this year?

Union is so useless I tell you! Fighting for all the wrong issues!

"Think for yourself instead of what you are being told by the union. Scary how someone can be so blind"

And you've disputed zero of the points brought up in the post that you were supposedly replying to. Excellent thinking.

I do go to church on Sunday's, and through the winter my family volunteers with Special Olympics bowing on Sunday afternoon. As for management working is support roles on Sunday, You took the job knowing it was salary. You also don't get paid extra for being the duty supervisor, so what's your point? I don't know where you're from, but when I'm forced to work 12, my supervisor is home when I get off, when I'm forced to work Sunday, my supervisor is at home, when I'm forced to work a holiday, my supervisor is at home. Bet you get 2 consecutive days off when you work Sunday too.

I'm union and this is a dumb question. There are bigger fish to fry. How about let's get back to work first.

Like any of you spend Sunday at church lol. Holiday double pay, np, but plenty of mgmt folks in support orgs work Sundays with straight pay / no differential.

He just learned this year what a no access in the city is. They needed to explain cables run thru other peoples property to get to the customer. If the cable is failed behind a no access point, access to the customer or home terminal doesnt mean anything.

"And can you explain why you feel you should get double time in Sunday's??"

That's the only day that we're guaranteed - more or less - to spend with our families. When one has survived 10 N-days in a row like some of us have, they get to appreciate that one day which VZ can't easily take away...

The least senior field tech in NY has 15 years of service. These people are not kids anymore, most of them have families and want to spend at least one day a week with them. If one is made to give that one day up per VZ's request under the "needs of the business" clause, they should - IMO - be compensated accordingly.

"I heard beasely married into mudge's family, is this true?"

FWIW, I've heard the very same thing but have no idea whether it's true or not. Beasley could be married into Obama's family for all I care. I have yet to speak to anyone working in NY on the craft side who doesn't want him gone. And that speaks volumes.

I agree that the double time Sundays and holidays is one of the more reasonable requests.

@tbb ..... I am non-union craft and have worked since the strike began. Here is why there should be double time on Sundays...if the company thinks it is so important for people to work on a Sunday ( holy day, family ) why the management is at home with their family, then the company needs to pay double time for Sunday. The same as the holidays; if it is so important to management to work on Christmas then they should be willing to pay double time. Other than that they can give everyone off.

This double-time business in the offered contract is one of the few negotiable items that the company will give in on. Center closing and relocations that will stay in the new contract.

I am for most of what you are fighting for but double time on Sunday's is ridiculous.. You say the company is greedy... And can you explain why you feel you should get double time in Sunday's??

"So ratify it. "

Not with all the other outstanding issues still on the table. Have you been following the developments - or shall we say lack thereof - in NY at all?

" I would say Brooklyn to VA cannot be driven. You are lying when you say they can do that. "

Apologies for typo on my end. What I meant was PA, not VA.

"This smells like the Fairpoint strike."

The last time I checked, VZ has not filed for bankruptcy protection prior to the strike. Maybe you know differently?

"You will never get back the wages you are losing now. "

Maybe. I'd rather lose a few months' worth of wages and keep my job for the next few years, though.

"Mediation would have been the smarter move for the unions."

Nope. Mediation would've allowed for all "non-essential" issues to be shoved down our throats, such as movement of work, Article 8...heck, no. It was mediation that got us that previous loser of the contract in 2012. Thanks, but no thanks. I'll stay out.

And if ratify before may 20

Sunday is not part of the workweek and ny can keep doubletime

So ratify it.

People cannot be moved more than driving distance. I would say Brooklyn to VA cannot be driven. You are lying when you say they can do that.

This smells like the Fairpoint strike. You will let May 20 come and go without ratification then you will agree to a worse contract 3 months from now. You will never get back the wages you are losing now.

Mediation would have been the smarter move for the unions. There is no bargaining power for them right now.

"Wrong it says people will not be moved."

It has the "ratification by May 20th" clause attached to it, and all of us know that one is not happening.

"So you are wrong or you were misinformed."

Neither. Study the Article 8 carefully and familiarize yourself with the layoffs that took place on 12/19/2002 and then re-read what I wrote.

"You even admit that they do not want their members to leave even if they want to."

That's not what I wrote. Anyone who really wants to leave will be gone with the first enhanced offer, and rightfully so.

NY unions - which is something that you should be aware of if you're well-versed on real issues that affect the negotiations in that state - want Beasley, his pawns and his QARs gone. For good. And VZ is not budging, which I can't really call a surprise move on their part.

A huge amount of people was dying to go out on strike, sooner the better. They just couldn't take the entire counterproductive nonsense that has been playing over there for any extended amount of time anymore.

So it's not our Mid-Atlantic sisters and brothers that are holding us up. It's the cream of the crop on VZ's NY side. It's them or us. Quite simple, really.

If they need splicers in brooklyn why dont they just open permanent positions open to all of verizon?

Instead there is a gypsy like temp transfered workforce and they come in and out

Not loyal to area and no pride and pissed off. Makes outside plant even more worse

Ier, don't speak for all of us. I'd like to take a package at the end not the beginning of this contract and it is true NY union was the only state that rejected the last super ipp.

They loan splicers from va to brooklyn. And im from brooklyn and they losned me to bronx. Based on garage only seniority

ier-

Wrong it says people will not be moved. They can move if they want to. So you are wrong or you were misinformed.

NY has refused the super IP offer. It has not allowed it yet. You even admit that they do not want their members to leave even if they want to.

So why are you striking? What is keeping you (the union) out? It is the Midatlantic that is holding this up.

"Where in the offer does it say they can lay people off in a year?"

Remove the Article 8 protection and combine it with the request for ability to move the workforce around as VZ has requested, and that's going to be the end result. They'll be loaning splicers from VA to Brooklyn while declaring surplus in the same title in Brooklyn and laying people off...a very realistic scenario if you seriously think about it. So there's really no "no layoff clause" to speak thereof unless the Article 8 remains in place.

"NY union does not want incentive retirement offers. They are only concerned with their numbers"

Nope. They just don't want the company offering packages whenever they deem fit. Someone has to stay and fight for the next contract.

"Some people want to leave and the upped retirement offer would help them out."

Whoever wants to leave will be out the door with the first offer, and we all know there will be one within months of contract ratification...

Where in the offer does it say they can lay people off in a year? It does not. The no layoff clause is in there for the whole contract. Why do you keep saying that?

NY union does not want incentive retirement offers. They are only concerned with their numbers. Some people want to leave and the upped retirement offer would help them out.

Unions can't force the company to hire people they don't want to hire. They can fight on wage and working conditions and that's about it.

"Union is so useless I tell you! Fighting for all the wrong issues!"

What good is back pay, profit sharing or ratification bonus going to do if just about everyone is without the job within a year?

We all know what the real issues are, and why both sides are stuck on getting their way when it comes to those.
