How does belonging to a union work? Do they represent specific job categories or do people get to pick which union they want to belong to?

IBEW (electrical trades) and CWA (communications trades) are both potential unions for VZ workers, dependent on geography / the organization and size of the labor groups and markets. there are one-offs as well, like the telco workers in Hershey PA being part of the Chocolate Workers union and in NW Indiana they were at one time in the Iron Workers union.
btw, GTE had nearly 200 collective bargaining groups to negotiate with (with no single union having more than 2% of the workforce)...this was a by-product of GTEs M&A strategy but kept impactful strikes at bay.
Like many others, I would expect wireline (including VES if possible) will be sold after the contract is settled.
The better the contract for VZ, the more it goes for.
I am none-EWA technical.
I would rather be sold to someone who wants us.
This would be better for both union and so called management.

Ohh and please explain to "your so called brothers and sisters" LOL that the majority of the profits are from the wireless business, not wireline. So, stop saying that VZ brings in billions every month. The billions is brought in to invest in the core business, not the dying business. Again, GET BACK TO WORK!!

VZ cares, they just don't care about the unions..... They care about their Core Business, (Wireless, iOT, AOL, VZDMS, Network, and soon XO and Yahoo). Greedy? Please educate me and others on this post. I would be my life that if you were in their shoes (top 6 execs) you would not be crying, poor me. Go get an education and apply for a top level executive position, no one is stopping you. The wireline business is a dying business, wireless is the wave of the future........ wvw - Not sure how it will end either. If you were one of the executives being harassed by personal attacks and stupid brady bunch parodies, what would you do?
Not to mention, you have Union members harassing wireless customers at your stores and telling people to go with the competition......
If these were your employees, what would you do?
Bottom line.... Sell us. I would rather work for a company that cares than work for a company that only cares about lining the pockets of the top 6. And yes those companies are out there. You managers already sold out and now you want us to. We will go back to a subpar contract before we lose our jobs. The union may be greedy but they aren't stupid. All in all I think we as a union will lose this fight but we will not be gone this contract. 10 or 15 years is a different story if Verizon doesn't sell. Verizon has started a division in the union in 2003 and 2012 and we will be on different pages in the future. It's the unions fault for allowing that to happen but they need to look out for here and now.
My understanding is that there are different levels of cardholders, for example an A card holder would be an electrical (paid more), a C card would be more of your Telco technician. Here is an A card holders range of pay.

I believe the Verizon offer far exceeds this scale and the Verizon folks are largely C card level people (I'm sure folks will help 'clarify' if I'm off base).
Bottom Line.....
Unions are losing their grip, it's not like the 20's and beyond when they meant something in this country. In these days they are not needed and they're afraid. VZ does not want to work with Unions anymore so if I was a member, I would cross and go back to work because eventually VZ will cut the cord and everyone will be jobless. This side of the business is old and VZ wants to sell it off just like the rest of the country. GET BACK TO WORK guys, it's not worth it anymore.
