Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

This strike is 100% Verizon's fault

What's wrong with keeping the existing contract? Why does Verizon "need" these changes?

In light of things, they really don't. The money they spend on ads, hotel rooms, overtime on higher wages, training classes in Virginia , airfare, etc. shows they have the money to spend when they want it

Also, 4 wireless stores voted the CWA as their union rep and Verizon refuses to negotiate a contract

This my friends is why Verizon is completely at fault

um, the last i checked this was not a lockout...the union decided to go on strike! turning away an offer for mediation showed the world that the union does not want to bargain in good faith.

1jnb you could be right. The NE is the last big union hold out. Once Verizon is rid of the unions most other companies will have to follow just to compete.

The best part of this whole strike is that once Verizon busts the union, then other companies like ATT and Comcast will realize it's possible and will follow suit. Soon, the union will be relegated to the dustbinof history with other great mistakes like slavery, communism, and genocide. Good riddance!

The company know that wireline will be much easier to sell with no union contract. The strike has given them a way to do this. The cost of EWA workers and temp workers are worth it to unload wireline.

the strike is wholly a Verizon thing.....they want the unions gone just like they got rid of 10,000 older non-union employees.....they don't want anyone that knows how it works to be there!

OP you can't be more wrong. The strike is 100% the fault of the greedy union members who want something for nothing and a handout from uncle Lowell. The union is a dinosaur of an institution and had no place in today's workforce. The union only perpetuates laziness and greed, and the members are worthless pieces of trash. Just because you don't want to work, and look for the easy way out in every situation is no reason for the company to be burdened with such an albatross across its neck. You're the worst example of what workers should be, and should have your children taken away from you for teaching them the same mindset. You're laziness and jag orange will be passed on to your children and the world will be stuck with yet another generation of pathetic people wanting to live on handouts. Every one of the union members are nothing more than common trash.

The money we are spending our airline points, car rental points, good meals every day, laundry, gas, mileage, and hotel programs is your paychecks, you dumbass picket monkeys. Stay out for months for all I care. You're just giving me your children's wedding present.

The Union Bosses better submit their resignation letters along with their "We Won" letter to the Membership when a TA is reached.

This made absolutely no sense. Why look for trouble where there was none? The should have just renewed the existing contract. As a long time manager I have seen a lot of dumb moves at Verzizon and predecessor companies. Even Dilbert has its roots in the phone company roots of its artist. But not renewing this contract ranks as one of the dumbest, most un-necessary self-inflicted wounds.

Harvard Business School will likely write one of their famous case studies, which are used by most of the other business schools, on the bad econimics of this decision to force a strike and showdown with the union in order to break it. Why? Because LowMac does not like the union.

So lets look at this. The company is making a good profit in troubled times. Revenue growth is modest, but then again, we really sell a commodity. Apart from taking customers from competitors due to better prices, services or quality - the only other read growth would be likely due to population growths. So we have a stable business, which is highly profitable even during difficult economic times, that picks a fight with its union. Result poor public image, poor customer service, angry work force and customers, increased costs, reduced efficiency and profit.

Stupid move!

Exactly, Verizon caused this mess...they have all this money to change their stupid corporate logo, buy up non performing/dying businesses, put up these temp scabs in fine hotels while paying them much much more to them than they do to their unionized workforce. This is among many other stupid things they blow their money on, but can't provide a fair and equitable contract to their unionized workforce. Talking about cutting off your nose to spite your face. Why is Verizon so penny wise and pound foolish?

Yeah keep telling yourself that the union bosses didn't make a huge mistake in not accepting mediation.
