Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Strike is OVER on May 20th!

You can "wage the war on the man" and fight along side your "brothers and sisters" all you want. But you do realize that once 5/20 hits, it would all be in vain since none of you will exist? There is no strike once everyone is eliminated.

What's the point in fighting the good fight if you know there is a guaranteed victory date for the opposing team?

@cav .... When VZ picked May 20 as a contract ratification date in order to remove temporary assignement in another state from the contract, that could likely be considered a 'shot across the bow' and a flag.

May 21st will likely begin the permanent replacement of strikers with the new hires. VZ could very well take a garage with 15 techs in it replace all of them with 4 new hires.

Seems to me the 'no layoff clause' is when there is a contract in effect.

As this is not an unfair labor strike and the VZ management has negotiated and made offers on the NLRB mandatory bargaining requirements it would appear that VZ is in its rights to replace strikers with permanent workers.

There's no deadline on how long a strike can go on... Fairpoint up north was on strike for 127 Days... So can the May 20th crap... This whole conversation and the negativity is terrible... We all should be worried if they send "their jobs" overseas... Ummm where will OUR Jobs go... So think b4 you wish them gone.. In reality... Many of you are wishing our own positions away... Essentially we are in the boat with them... They want us gone too... At the end... We are American workers too that they don't want to pay...

Why are the union people so obsessed with how long the EWA people have to keep working EWA? Like it's the worst thing ever. Seriously? Where else can you make double your pay, get free meals, and do a job that you are becoming more and more capable of doing with each passing day? Form many people, it's a welcome break from their normal lives to be out in the field. Most of my non Vz friends have to travel the country and the world for their jobs so this is no big deal. People away from their families for extended periods are getting relief, and the company is getting people in place to add more relief.

Quit with the end of the world scenario about EWA. Maybe for many in the union is would be end of the world to have to do something that you don't necessarily want to do, but we're management. We can handle it.

May 20th is just a rumour. There are rumors everywhere right now. I think if nothing changes after the shareholder meeting, the only person could save the Union is Bernie Sanders. It would be a long haul for Union and the result might not be good.

No, the Union didn't let these members to vote. From my understanding. Based on the last offer, there are almost no effect on those retirees and over 30 years or will be 30 years soon within two to three years. So, if they had decided to vote, the last offer would have been accepted already.

Does the Union ever put the last and final out to the Union members to vote? How does this work?

I do not know labor law, but even with the deadline, I doubt you can fire the union members who are on strike.

Also, it would depend on what are the strike issues. If it is not financial (job security?), I do not know how the law's apply.

VZ may be greedy, but they are not stupid.

Trivial point, It's on here, its been put on union sites, and in various news reports. The point is it's out there.

To your trivial point, why would Verizon just let it be known internally? To just chest pound their employees?

I heard may 20th was a made up date. Just for the press. You know how Verizon likes to posture for the press. I dare you, I double dare you, I I I triple dare you.

The strike is over on the 20th but ewa workers have to work until the newbies are hired and trained and in the field.probably until August. At least we won't have to do this ever again.

Meds? Do you really lack that much communcation? On May 20th? It's considered "job abandonment." That means you fired yourself. No more union, more more you. You're fighting a war that cannot be won.
