Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Is there really a 400 million or 500 million union strike fund?

employees dues pay for the union leadership salaries, bonuses, staffing, and leasing and other office expenses. Where is the other 400-500 million coming from?

If that is true, the money has to be coming from the pension fund - there is no where else that kind of money is coming from. The union trustee that manages the funds would have access and there are rules that apply to emergencies.

Future union employees payroll and company contributions are needed in order to pay for retirees today. That is why you read about other union pension benefit cutbacks. It is a Ponzi scheme.

Not only will you need to look temporary work, you will need to set a few bucks away, on your own, in order to compensate for union leadership neglect and corruption.

Uh huh..right..same experts that said a few weeks ago that the strike would end right before any strike fund money was to be paid out...then the same experts said it would end before May 1 so that medical costs wont be paid out...

Now we are at strike payment #2 and next week its going to be even more

stop listening to the 4 people who constantly post on here to stir the pot

The 400 million is likely there, but not in liquid funds. Rather, the union would need to sell some assets they bought with the money for their high ups, shift a little cash from their offshore accts, call in some loans to their family members. You know the drill. Of course, that won't happen. They will spend some token chunks of cash and then magically come back to the table or cry poverty. Union is run by pros.

It does exist. But union only want to use it for 200 dollars a week strike support, emergency room cost and free COBRA for those eligible families.

Good question. The CWA members should question the leaders where is the strike fund and why they need everyone to donate. I listened the record of District 2-13 meeting on Sunday evening. Nobody ask the question during the conference call. It is very weird. And the story about that EWAer's son doesn't make any sense in this meeting. All I heard is brainwash nonsense.

Then why is the union asking for donations?

There will be 38.4 million A YEAR. And CWA members are not just from Verizon, also other companies. It is very possible there are 400 million to 500 million strike fund.

I changed the math and more than doubled the monthly fee to $80 per month for each union memeber.

If 40000 members - this would give $3.2 Million per month.

I just don't see where the $400-500 million is coming from.

There are trade offs tin hiring contractors. The quality control issues , the safety concerns. Contracting have proven issues with quality work, which would put Verizon is a difficult position with customers. Also safety , doing background checks on contractors going into residential and commercial premises .

Union Guys and Gals .... let me start by saying this. I honestly to God hope you get what ever you demand from Verizon. I think if you can get it from this greedy corporation, AWESOME.

That being said, Verizon doesn't want you to come back. They want to hire contract people for half of what they are paying you with no union ties. The union guys are going to figure this out eventually and they will not let you deflate the cash in their bucket after a certain point since you won't be able to fill it back up again.

This is NOT the same Verizon from the last strike.

The company also realizes that CWA jobs are easier to outsource than IBEW and IBEW does not have a strike fund. Assume they are planning for them to hopefully cross and then they will contract and outsource cwa over time.

I did the math......

Lets say 40,000 members and lets say that each is paying an average $30 per month in dues. That would be $1.2 million per month generated by dues.

That doesn't quite make it if you deduct paying the salaries and/or benefits of full-time or part-time union leaders and/or staff; union governance; legal representation; legislative lobbying; political campaigns, safety funds, etc..........

According to the CWA website, only 11.1% go to the employee relief fund.

And the temporary employees, along with those that cross, and tech EWAs, can keep it going a very long time.

This is really bad for the union.

Lose the house, lose the car, lose the wife, and children.

Not a good situation to be in.

It is a fair (not good) offer.

Take it, and accept arbitration/mediation.

Keep all your stuff, and make good money.

It's only for CWA so the final tally is not 36 - 40K members they are paying for. This fund was saved from a portion of our dues. The CWA territories can keep this going indefinitely which is going to be bad for the company since NY is a major service hub.

Keep it positive. 36000 to 40000 union fee paying members equals lots of money each year... do the math,,,
