21 May 2016 - Replacement of Union members begin?

Always a date for something. This one is 20 May 2016 for contract ratification and if not ratified is this the date that VZ begins to replace Union members with the new hires? Lets face it...no ULP called and Impasse declared with the Last, Best and Final Offer. The company is hiring folks in droves and it is obvious that VZ is willing to go well past Christmas if they want to.

The NLRB mandatory bargaining requirements have been met with the final offer and things such as call centers, staffing, etc. fall under a managerial 'in the best interest of the business' function that is generally not a mandatory bargaining requirement.

In short...the Union has been routed and it seems unlikely they have a strong legal recourse as VZ seems to have met NLRB requirements.

Verizon does not appear to be concerned about the meager %7 profit that wireline brings to the corp and appears to be willing to decimate the wireline business and flush down the Union. Once that is done one would guess the next step could be to spin off the OSP and let them run as a CLEC. Keeping Inside Plant and fibers for merging into the wireless business.

It appears to be all over but the crying.

5/20 ratification date is correct, but pol is correct about no empasse, and no lockout, and no perminent replacements. VZ is going with contractor scabs. They're putting some from outside the region up in hotels.

OP has no idea what he/she is talking about. Company has no intention of hiring full time replacements;they want non-union contractors. OP also has no clue on the dates. The first few hundred contractor scabs have orientation and 1st day of work 5/9, and 2nd wave will be deployed to ongoing orientations as they come in, which will attend orientation and 1st day of work starting every Monday. Thus far outside of the 5/9 group which is specifically for NYC area, they have postings so far for 510 more in NE footprint on careerbuilder.com. Pay is $25-30/hr depending on field experience during 90 day probationary period and then $30 after probationary period, plus $128/day per diem.

Well, the Union is leaving the table at these meetings or being left at the table without getting what they want. Verizon is adamant about the final offer being the final offer. That is an Impasse.

Did someone declare Impasse to the NLRB? Not as far as I know...but since the Union has refused mediation and refuses to accept the final offer they are in a bad spot. Verizon continues to meet the Union at the table so they can say 'We are at the table when the Union wants us to be there. We can't help it they do not understand that the final offer is the final offer.'

Basically, bargaining is over with from Verizon's perspective.

Everyone keeps throwing this impasse crap around, however the union and the company keep meeting with each other and we keep getting bargaining updates, is this really an impasse if they keep meeting?

@fnk .... one should not confuse the wireline legacy copper service to the house with the wireline fiber backbone that is in place. XO was purchased for their fiber backbone and they were in several areas with a lot of fiber where we do not have fiber.

It would be quite simple for the company to retain the C.O.T and fiber equipment ( perimeter tape around the equipment ) and spin off the rest of the copper and switched network.

Stratton and others have already mentioned how fiber is a must for the 5G. Wireline has two sides and anyone involved in this strike should understand that VZ is not miffed one bit about loosing the traditional wireline revenue. They do not even care about T1 level of service. Anything less than a 10gig fiber circuit to a business is of no interest to VZ.

The company has stated several times that the last offer was their 'last offer' and they are not accepting anything from the Union.

That is an Impasse.

The Union refuses to mediate.

That is an Impasse.

Since the Union did not file a ULP strike the company seems to have the right to hire permanent replacements.

That is the result of an Impasse.

You know, for awhile I felt bad for the union. But coming on this board and seeing union people posting Lowell's private phone number and posting a LOT of mean spirited, nasty, selfish, childish crap makes me not feel sorry for you at all.

I figured it out. Landline dies, but Verizon will need to put the debt somewhere. In comes yahoo. McAdam will do anything to make sure his baby (wireless) looks good.
