Wireline is actually still used , security systems, elevator lines and almost every big business I know has a few good old fashion pots lines when there voip goes down. Even big data centers have modems set up to access there equipment in event of failures. We are shrinking but the switch can:t be turned off yet, I believe the wireline loss is slowing down. 50meg dsl equipment is online now if your within 10000 feet of the CO and thats plenty for most people. I think VZ is missing the boat because as technology improves the more can be done on copper wires other than plain old telephone service and they've paid for it decades ago.
