EWA workers; Learn About The Real Verizon Management Style

You EWA workers eating your free buffalo wings in your hotel do not know how the company really manages things let me explain.....

The company used to have people at work "on call" to dispatch out and fix a circuit if needed. If there were no repairs in that area for an hour or 2, which happened a lot especially after hours, the company did not care, because it used to be worth it to them to have someone on call particularly for more high end customers who demand 24 hour dispatch.

The company also had people "on call" in various central office jobs, to assist the field or deal with whatever situation might arise,24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

You could compare it to a night security guard or even the fire dept. They might not be working at all times, but they are paid to be there in the event they are needed. It is their job to be there and be available for dispatch.

With the new system coming from VLSS or wherever, that is no longer the case, now it is no longer acceptable that anyone be on call. We do not know how many repairs might be needed at any given time. It could be feast or famine, we do not make widgets on an assembly line, but our productivity is evaluated in this way. The result? If there are not enough repairs the tech has done something wrong. If the tech has done something wrong the manager has done something wrong. So managers scramble to find pointless busywork to CYA.

Techs are evaluated for something called "FDR" or "First Dispatch Resolution". This means that the company would like an install or repair to be permanently resolved on the first dispatch.

A laudable goal, but what if the customer is not home? You can't break into their house and fix the line. You would think the company would not hold it against their technician if the customer is not available to provide access, but they do! Every no access counts against the field technician's numbers for FDR.

Ok but what if there is a problem inside the Central Office? Field techs cannot work in the central office, surely that would not count against their numbers! OH but yes it does! Every time there is a problem in the Central Office, it now counts against the field techs FDR number.

Ok, but what about if the cable itself is defective at the customer's location? The field tech only works with the end-user from the f1, it can't be his fault if there are no acceptable pairs at the feeder! That is cable maintenance's job right? Wrong again! Every job that is returned to cable maintenance goes against the technicians FDR numbers!

Ok so why does it matter what FDR numbers a tech has? Obviously the system is totally unreasonable, no one can think this is a fair way to evaluate performance so it should not affect the techs job right?

Wrong again! The bottom 6 technicians with lowest FDR numbers are brought in by management for a QAR (I believe it stand for Quality Assurance Review) during the QAR, the technician is interrogated for hours over exactly what he did on some random day. If he cannot explain everything, if he went to the bathroom without asking for permission and forgot about it days later, he will be Suspended without pay for 30 days. That is 30 business days, so six weeks without pay. The tech is also placed on a 2 year final warning, so that if they ever catch him for any infraction no matter how trivial (or even made up) he will lose his job, and the pension he has worked for for 20 or 30 years.

And this is currently the case no matter how good the numbers in a shop are! No matter how high they get that number there will always be 6 people on the bottom, and those people will be harassed and possibly suspended.

The company claims they do this to improve customer service. If they are concerned with customer service, they could do a lot more by repairing some of the cable that is still in use. They are not too interested in that for some reason.

Personally, I believe the whole system was designed to harass Union techs, make them retire, make them quit or fire them.

Where I worked in the months prior to the strike everyone was completely miserable.

@pkz

Right on brother!

I used to have great reviews too!

I was told confidentially by a foreman that he has to find something wrong with everyone or they will find something wrong with him!

Nice work environment Verizon.!

Ready, I will try to use small words. If you have time here, and a pension you will leave many one dollar bills on the table. So option B is, making it better for all. I don't have problems, my dept does not deal with QAR B.S. Many on this board know absolutely nothing about outside craft, but have no trouble thinking what they say makes sense.I will stay, I will try to make it better, i will retire with a pension good luck to you.

@jxp ... I didn't start to hate the environment til roughly this past October. Note, I said environment and not job. Love what I do. And, I've done it well for over 27 years. Am I really supposed to throw it all away and start over when I'm this close to retirement? I have consistently had a rating of Exceeds Requirements because of my quality and customer service. However, I have now found myself sitting in an investigations for up to 7.5 hours to pore over my GPS records because of unrealistic productivity metrics. And, you know what they found? 15 minutes of time I couldn't explain from a week prior. And, now you're going to tell me that the problem here is my attitude and not the company policies? Son, you have no clue what you're talking about.

Hell I got suspended for 7 days for being bitten by a dog that escaped from the customers house and the had to reimburse the company for medical because it was a preventable / chargeable accident. I got my money back but at the witch supervisors expense. I haven't spoke to her in 2 years. Those pesky snakes and wolf spiders keep finding their way into the shop and her office. She now has to take anxiety and other psych melds just to make it in the shop after we all leave for the day.

Or...

How about you guys leave if you don't like CWA?

You know what?

It is our Phone Company not yours! Literally generations of our families built and maintained it!

You guys are just some anti-union scumbags from Texas.

Another dope. If you had time, you would know it was not like this 20 years ago. GPS,QAR, are not programs that have been here before McAdam, understand? Back and forth with you people is like trying to explain stuff to kids.

Wrong again company man.

It has only been miserable for about 16 months. I had about 18 good years before that.

How much do you get paid to post here anyway?

@VUF: Hey Enstein, if you don't like the corporate culture then leave and find one you like better.

Are you too stupid to find a job you like better or are you just too lazy? It sounds like you're more than happy to stay in the same job being miserable and complaining/whining instead of doing something about it.

rdw:

So what you're saying is you're not going to let someone bully you out of a job, you'll just show them by staying in that job for 20 years and being miserable.

That sounds pretty stupid to me, but hey if you don't mind being miserable then have at it.

The OP is bitching and complaining about his job instead of doing the work to find another job that suits him better.

If it's that bad, go to HR and file a complaint. If it doesn't get better and you continue to hate your job then find a new one. This is not rocket science.

Some of you are exceptionally stupid if you've stayed in a job you hate for 20+ years.

I am not going just to let someone bully me out of my job, that is what they want me to do; quit.

That is their exact plan.

Before I do quit, if the Union doesn't take care of this then I am going to do my best to expose Verizon's unethical practices and toxic work environment.

Finally, before I leave I am going to drag somebody down to HELL.

Somebody like you @zpk. Can you understand that? Dragging your fat assto hell would be "the perfect little job" for me.

The OP is spot on. Leave the company you say? Why should he? He worked hard for years and years and then is supposed to leave because management is intimidating him? Lowell and his Team seem to take a personal issue with the union. There running this place into the ground just to break the union. These QAR's have nothing to do with th customer. Keep in mind if the trouble is in the CO were not even allowed to return it to the CO. Must close. Job never gets fixed. Cust still outta OOS. Cust has to call back. Gets put thru same song and dance. Finally cust cancels......but hey tech has a low FDR he must be doing good out there right??. Cust must be happy right???

Some company cultures are not for everyone.

Really, so as discribed who would be ok with that culture. You people are so weak, kick in the head and sit back and take it.

You people have been on strike repeatedly over the years. I've been with this company for 20 years, and when people are constantly unhappy with their jobs and therefore strike at every opportunity it tells me maybe the strikers need to find a job somewhere else. My job isn't perfect either, but I don't walk out on it every four years; if I felt like I needed to do that I'd find another job.

It's not like this strike is the first one -- it happens constantly with you people.

If the job is that consistently bad that you have to strike at every single opportunity then get off your fat assand go find a better job!

@vtd ... according to your logic, if your neighbor's dog is crapping in your yard, you should just buy another house instead of dealing with the problem.

@lrc: People should be treated decently. If you aren't being treated decently that's what HR is for. If you continue to not be treated decently go find a job with a better company. Some company cultures are not for everyone.

Kudos that you're actually looking for another job instead of sitting around with a sense of entitlement.

Hey dummy, what is wrong with making things better. Again, fight the good fight to make it better, no comprendo? Some of us have time here, do you know what that is? So leaving ay this point is not an option, but making it better is. And if we did leave nothing would change, a fair work place is not unreasonable. I will leave here with a hefty pension, but again, dummy, we can make it better. Unlike the managers who take anything the company does, we want to make it better, get it? Commense smart assnon union comments.

nxj: If you don't like it go find another job instead of sitting around on your fat asscomplaining.

You are not entitled to having Verizon create the perfect little job for you. You can either do the job and get paid for your work, or quit and go find something that better suits your needs. Being too lazy to find another job is not a good excuse.

Currently, I am hoping to leave as soon as possible while still leaving with some portion of the pension I have been waiting all these years for. I am not yet eligible but I hope soon I will be with the right incentive from the company. I am definitely leaving, I am just waiting for the right moment.

A question for you..why do you think people who come to work every day, and who have done nothing wrong are not entitled to be treated decently? I suppose in your brainwashed mind we should all be grateful that we are even allowed to exist! Wake up!

Oh and another thing this QAR is designed for harrasment. That's its only purpose.

It doesn't solve a thing, it's only used as weapon against people. In fact they will question you all morning while you have an 8 to 12 in your work log. Then when it's a no access because the customer left it counts against you! Wtf

I say we don't go back to work until the thousands of workdays lost to suspensions from this program are restored and this illegal program is shelved.

The job itself is not miserable it's the people above who come up with these harassing plans that make it so. Why should I give up a career because some a--hole director decides he wants to Harrass me this way?

That post was exactly on point. Everything counts against you. That cable that's failing? It's been reported over 100 times

Some of the xboxes have tags from the 1970s about the defective condition. Yes you read that right, the 1970s!!!

So almost 50 years later the techs are now being punished for these same poor condition under these programs

If those people are so miserable why not go find another job?

This is what I don't understand about you people. You stick around in these jobs you say are miserable, and instead of doing something about it you just sit there and complain before walking out on the job.

If you don't like the job, leave and find one that is better for you. How hard is that to comprehend? You are not entitled to having the company create the perfect job for you.
