Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

The people who would be forced to commute 89 miles a day

Imagine this. You work for the telephone company , then NYNEX and then bell Atlantic. You are given the job security protection and no force transfers more then 35 miles (in return for other things)

Now the company wants to renig, close your office and make you commute 59 to 90 miles each way. You have to sell your house, uproot family or quit.

And it's not your fault. You didn't cause this. The company made an agreement a long time ago and now it's "too bad" take it or leave it.

The company got many things in return for that job security letter , are they going to give that back? What about all support from the Union peope for their telecom act of 1996 wishes? The freedom from regulations which made them 100s of millions?

I'm sorry but a deal is a deal. Offering these people $5000 payment so they can uproot them and renig is not cool

How about this. All those people they want to force get to use private jets to commute?

Been driving over 65 miles a day each way to my union job for almost 30 years. My wife drives 55 miles each way 3 times a week and is now driving 75 miles each way 2 times a week to make up for some of my lost income. Can't say that I would support a strike for only those reasons. Unfortunately they aren't.

I commute 86 miles both ways every day and I don't complain. It's hard to find a company that provides good benefits and pretty decent pay. Trust me, I've been out there looking for a job before joining Verizon and it's not easy. Plus, Vz is not forcing you to uproot your family. That is your choice, not the company. Sometimes you have to put on your big boy pants and make certain sacrifices to provide your family a better life. You can't have your cake and eat it too! And stop bringing back up the past, telecom and the business world has changed since 1996...join the 21the century.

kga ,

If that were the case your employment could be considered year to year or even day to day. Is medical written in the employment contract that it is until retirement /death? No. But Verizon pays medical until death / retirement. Certain thing are understood between the two parties, its called a mutual understanding.

Ok. The company wants to increase it to 50 miles.. But for these people it would be over 50 miles some up to 90 each way. Take it or quit

So everyone else is protected by a 50 mile max transfer except for a few who have to go 90. I don't think anyone would agree that is fair

@bjp

Show me where the contract says the 35 mile rule is in perpetuity. It is up for negotiation evertytime the current contract ends. So... going back to the mortgage example, 30 years is written in the mortgage contract. In perpetuity is not written in the Union's contract. If it were you would have a point. If I'm wrong (since I'm not sure I was even born when the rule went into effect) I will give it to you. But I have never seen it in the 3 contracts I have been a part of.

So as a union tech hired after 03 in Pennsylvania I have to say I hope were not still out over a few hundred call center techs having to "commute" a little farther. I've seen too many Co workers laid off or told there job is in Philly. I've seen garages close. I've seen Co workers having to commute 2 hrs to Philly each day. Point is this stuff has been happening to us for a few years now. Is it unfortunate? Yes. Is it worth being on strike for God knows how long? Absolutly not.

That's life. If people never uprooted their families to put food on the table, we'd all still be living in Africa.

I drive over an hour every day to get to work. I don't expect the company base it's locations in where I want to live.

So... do you have a mortgage that you committed to a rate of 6.5% 15 years ago, but refuse to refinance to a 3.25% today? Just trying to point out people and companies cannot predict the future and should not be forced to continue deals that were made long before Verizon was even thought of.

Add to that retires medical which they have screwed them, they are paying more and more, also they sold 40,000 retired pensions to Prudential Ins. That case is still being litigated .
