Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Straight from Stratton

Stratton visited the SS EWA team yesterday and provided some clarification on the status of the bargaining amd next steps:

  1. The offer they submitted to the union is FINAL. Negotiations have been ongoing for 10 months what they have now is the final offer and will not be changed.

  2. When asked when EWA will return to BAU he said they are working on hiring replacements as quick as possible. Plan is to reduce EWA workload over time. Said it could go to xmas if it needs too. Current goal is to have EWA job for 2 weeks and then rotate out and do BAU job for 2 weeks. Plan is not set in stone.

Im a 'upper middle class' non union piece of sh--. I dont always root for other people but when i do I root for 'the people who were hired by those that invested the most into the company and have the most to lose' that screw over other 'employees that don't actually qualify to be referred to as poor' people . Im 'required to have a bachelors degree' but since i work in an office 'I am required to be more' educated then the guys who work outside with their hands. Fully knowing that at least one third of those guys have college degrees . I dont want to fight for what the union guys have! I would rather 'not have my life and future dictated by others I can't control' and instead 'strive to build a competitive skillset so that the high market value for my position can be determined by demand and high market competition instead of fighting' to make sure they dont have sh-- like me.

I love that if you search for that video on google all of the results are you guys posting the same video on this forum over and over again. Look at how your strike has impacted the stock currently, that is a literal live representation of sharehokder confidence. The shareholders realize that you have at most a minimal impact on the bottom line. The union is trying to negotiate with tactics that would only work if they had control over much more of the revenue. Just accept your fair, not great, but fair contract and begin the process of moving on while being paid well. VZ doesnt give a sh$t about wireline anymore.

At times goes by... There are 50 Fios installation contractors come from VA training center everyday. It is happening right now. My friend is one of the trainers in VA.

At times goes by...EWAers can fly back to see their families for two to three days a week or they can bring their families up to see them. They have at least one day off a week now.

At times goes by...You cannot have any unemployment after a certain time. Some states have very strict rules on applying for unemployment, therefore I think most of the people are not as lucky as you.

At times goes by...The union membership keep shrinking until a handful. You are no longer an union member.

Please enjoy your unemployment and Union support.

The unemployment benefits vary by state. In the mid atlantic you will not be eligible for unemployment. Will the union be paying you an amount in the ballpark of your weekly check? Will the union pay for the members health insurance for the next 9 months for any of your families routine checkups? That health insurance costs more than 1k a month. What about IBEW employees? What will they receive? How does this strike impact the pay of the union leaders? I would assume if you are leading this battle, resulting in members that will be asked to suffer, as a result of your decision making, then the leaders would bear this pain with you. One day stronger as they say.

@uva As time goes by.....The Union Membership unemployment benefits will kick in, actually starting soon.

As time goes by......The Union Memberships relief funds benefits will kick in, add that to the unemployment checks, and you'll have them getting almost what they were getting weekly. FACT!

As time goes by......The EWA staff will be gowning ever weary of 12 hour shifts 7 days a week, I don't care how much there paying them, it's not enough to be away from your family in a hotel room this long.

As time goes by.......Verizon is losing thousands of installation new customers per day. Tami Erwin has said The FIOS president. Verizon ad's 30,000 to 35,000 FIOS customers per week. so they have lost over 70,000 so far and counting.

As time goes by.......customers are switching do to NO SERVICE issues...No can go without internet for days on end.

As time goes by......Verizon name brand is falling on Wall Street directly related to this work stoppage.

As time goes by....... Verizon just can not replace a 40,000 20+years experienced work force over night, over weeks, over, months, over years. and certainly not as quickly as The Almighty Wall Street will allow.

As time goes by........The Union position is getting stronger. Hence the Union's One day longer, One Day Stronger chants... and the companies position will soon have to answer to Wall Street........These are the Facts

Thank you for posting what Stratton said. I am on EWA and the only thing we hear from the supervisors here is "We don't know anything other than we get to keep all of you here as long as we want". Really? During our training we were told that we were strictly here for 2 weeks to give offshore time to ramp up and train their resources. We have been here 18 days and counting but we have seen people crossing the picket line and we know that temp employees have been hired and are in training.

  1. They can hire temporary replacements, the union members will have there old jobs back when they come back.

  2. As time goes on, more people will start crossing, as family situation require it. (mortgage, car loans, health, etc).

  3. As time goes on, some EWA will quit, as they can.

(When I was on strike duty a long time ago, for US West, I was close after 2 weeks).

  1. CWA members need to look at the offer, and not return the envelope unopened.

Know what your union leaders are rejecting.

  1. The devil is in the details, but overall the offer looks fair, to me.

The insurance is good, most everyone pays more in premiums for good insurance

Longer serving members get both Pension (Capped at 30 years) and matching 401K.

This is really good.

No layoffs if you do not one. This is good.

The temporary assignments are the only drag on it. How about (do not know if VZ will accept it), and 100.00 per day premium, if the temp assignment is more then 50 miles away.

This is an industry, and is in change, and wireline is declining, still makes a profit. The total profit of Verizon, does not matter, the total profit of wireline (7%) does.

The company will never HIRE replacements, they will only contract the work out so its temporary. They will always avoid paying benefits.

" I suspect the right to work states will see a lot of workers returning soon as well."

Only one state out of those on strike is a "right to work" state...
