Thread regarding AT&T Inc. layoffs

Reality Check

AT&T workers reject contract, face déjà vu betrayal by union, why anyone would belong, and pay union dues, when corruption is a common practice at the core of the union movement.

On March 21, AT&T West workers resoundingly rejected a proposed contract that would have capped wages at $22 an hour and offered paltry health care plans, while demanding increased pension contributions. AT&T West workers have been working without a contract since April of last year. After the rejection of the contract, workers voted to authorize strike action.

The Communication Workers of America (CWA) union resumed negotiations with the company the following day. Growing militancy of the rank-and-file workers is being stifled by their alleged representatives, making the possibility of a strike and its subsequent quelling by the CWA ever more likely.

Responding to the rejection of the contract and the prospect of a strike, CWA District 9 representative and president T. Santora said, “We regret it had to come to this.” Vice President Jim Weitkampf also offered his dismay, stating, “Clearly, our members are strong in their convictions.” Elaborating on the next steps for the negotiations process Weitkampf offered, “What happens next will be determined in large part by the company’s response.”

I think all the people on here putting down the Union must have some other way to make a living.

This year will make 22 years with CWA/AT&T and all that I get, I work for. Our Union isn't as strong as it once was but it is still relevant in today's environment with big Corporations. I am glad to have our union on our side. However, would I want them to have control over my pension? Probably not. That fate could happen with a number of non union companies as well. Unity is what keeps us together as workers and brothers & sisters, not division as others on here (probably managers) would have you to believe.

Whomever counted those votes decided your fate. Put on your big boy pants and send a letter to your local severing your ties with them. A template, or thousands, reside on the internet. Dues come out of your check but the local pays you back a percentage after their take- by law. Or, you can continue to pay them to f-u. They have a fiduciary duty to represent you, member or not, if they want to practice the dark arts at ATT. Look up the Central States teamster union. They have recently requested of the government to allow them to cut pension benefits to their drivers up to 50% or they run the risk of insolvency within the next decade. The forward thinking negotiators at UPS secured a contract that has the company paying their drivers for any shortfall. NOW THAT'S REPRESENTATION!
