Thread regarding AT&T Inc. layoffs

Surplus and RIF

Why does AT&T call it a Surplus and Verizon call it a RIF, but neither calls it a layoff?

Was Surplus just a Southwestern Bell/Ameritech/Pacific Bell/Bellsouth term that carried over while RIF came from Bell Atlantic/NYNEX/GTE?

Why the different terms if almost all came from Ma Bell (or in GTE's case, Cousin Ring)?

They all go out the door, the few that made it to interim status, were cut within the next 4 surplus quarters.

ATT is not offering jobs for 90% of the laid off people both management and union. Where would they go ? Adding people to another location will only cause that location to be cut. later this year and next you will see many cuts and in most cases it will come as a total shock to people who are clueless about what's really going on in other departments. Management is being told to train for the future or be gone. Guess what, it's all an excuse to downsize when they don't get all the training. The latest is they are expected to do training on their own time.

Read thru this blog and you will see the total shock in some people when they are hit. Entire groups are being to they need "surpluses to save cost" . All it is, is more for Randall 32 million in 2014 and even higher now. Can you say the word GREED

Because layoff is a "trigger" word, whereas Surplus or RIF have less of a "sting" in the word. In addition to that AT&T often, if not always, allows surplussed employees to either relocate to where the job is moving to or given an opportunity to be considered for another job within the company.
