AT&T about to get yahoo

Yahoo, the once-vaunted internet giant, is in shambles. Its revenue is in decline. Its shareholders are crying foul. Its prized public faces are scrambling for an exit, and the company has laid off 15 percent of its workforce. Its core business—internet search and advertising—is negatively valued. Looming over all of this is a prospective sale of the company’s core assets, bids for which have reportedly reached more than $5 billion.

That potential sale is in stark contrast to the four years CEO Marissa Mayer led Yahoo through an acquisition binge, snapping up 53 companies for a total of $2.3 billion, according to a company spokesperson. (Other estimates put that number closer to $2.8 billion.)

As CEO, Mayer has had the unpleasant honor of leading a company that seemed destined to fail, but that wasn’t always the case. When she took over in mid-2012, employees were so enthusiastic about her arrival that one even photoshopped her face on Obama-style “hope” posters and hung them up around the company’s headquarters. Mayer did her best to live up to lofty expectations. She deployed quick fixes to solve Yahoo’s morale problems, including expanding parental leave and hiring high-profile celebrities to run the company’s media division.

This might become battle of the ego. Additional "suitors" make yahoo more valuable. Somebody will overpay. Question is will it be T? Premium bidding (and subsequent failure) makes Randall poised for his own layoff.

ATT does not have a chance. 4 other company's out bid both ATT and Verizon. A consortium led by Quicken Loans founder Dan Gilbert, and backed by Berkshire Hathaway Chairman Warren Buffett is on top so far and the smart money indicates ATT and Verizon are not going to win unless they get real stupid and buy at any cost. Then the issue will be how to pay. Want to bet more and faster layoffs?

Yahoo was already a sinking ship when Marisa joined. I don't think she was well suited for the job, she lacked experience, but with sinking ships you only need to show some marginal improvement on some metric somewhere. She had shiny object syndrome just like Randy. buys everything, innovates nothing.

I imagine the board will wait until T is on life support too and then expect someone to come in and work miracles. It won't be fair, but hopefully Randall and Marisa will go down as classic case studies on leadership, culture and positive correlation to revenue. You can't innovate in sick culture, it's killing the company slowly.

Marissa Meyer was perhaps the single worst, most underqualified, and biggest disaster as CEO since Carly Fiorina.

From the very beginning she charted a path to complete failure, and barely deviated from it. Whether it was her dictatorial style, her anachronistic approach to employee relations, her total lack of understanding of the business, or her amazing short-sightedness of allowing advertisers to determine Yahoo content. She's shown herself unfit to be the third-shift manager at a truck-stop diner, much less a CEO.

The only benefit for Yahoo is that nobody - not even the current AT&T execs - can do a worse job than Meyer.

They can afford it with more surpluses. They likely add the costs by associating how many jobs they can cut. It's " Randall math"

Under Marissa Meyer Yahoo bought 35 companies and sucked the cash out of them. This resulted in some layoffs for the impacted employees yet there seem to be no impact for Marissa. If AT&T gets Yahoo the Yahoo employees should run for their lives. AT&The used to invent thinhs. Now they like a lot of companies just buy other companies.
