I would suspect that if the expenses include any "wages, tips, or compensations" for yourself then you are employed. It's pretty clear. If you have any income and you have to check that box, you lose that week (or delay it). That doesn't mean you can't still file continuously to remain active for the first week that comes up with no income. Also, I understand that the balance is fixed, you can take up to a year while you are active and filing (in our state) to get your 26 weeks, you don't lose any of it. It does go pretty quick, though.

Your unemployment pay is determined week by week, hence why you have to report any income you make during a week. Whenever you get your severance pay, you'll have to report that as income for that particular week and you will not receive any unemployment pay. But you'll go right back to getting your normal unemployment check the week after your severance is paid.

I agree and from my personal experience in 2015, @zzk is correct. File for unemployment benefits online with the TWC on Day 1 after you have been terminated. The type of severance payment (single payment) that Chevron pays does not disqualify you.
From personal experience I can say you don't have to wait. The Chevron severance payout is not considered severance pay for the purposes of unemployment insurance because it is given as compensation for an agreement not to sue and because Chevron has no vested severance benefit (i.e. they decide on a case by case basis, it's not part of your employment contract or benefit package).
TWC is kinda vague on this and require you to report severance so they can determine if you are eligible
