My EWA Supervisor: EWA workers were a "110% improvement" over the union workers.

According to him, the union employees know how to do the work better and are more experienced but the EWA workers attitude and work ethic was night and day. He said it was refreshing that the EWA'ers actually were respectful and wanted to get things done as opposed to the constant whining with the union employees.

He also said asking the union employees to do ANYTHING that might be considered above and beyond was out of the question. They do the bare minimum they need to in order to get by "on a good day".

I thought his comments were really telling. No one expected the managers to be as good technically as the union people -- these managers went to college to avoid having a career climbing poles -- but it sure sounds like productivity and attitude of the replacement workers was no contest.

I'm pretty sure the company won the strike, lol. They didn't give up anything they weren't prepared to, and they saved money by not having to pay the union salaries and healthcare for almost 2 months (even with all the management overtime they came out way ahead financially.

The union people, on the other hand, didn't get paid anything for almost 2 months, didn't get any significant concessions (if you don't believe me just look at the multitude of posts on here demanding people vote NO and generally being angry), and lost a significant amount of income that the new contract won't make up.

So....the company came out ahead financially, the union leadership got paid the entire time, and the union workers didn't get jack squat in consessions and lost 2 months worth of salary.

Doesn't sound like much of a win for the union to me, LOL.

Well..I will tell you this...You guys can Bitch..Moan..Cry..Whine..drop to the floor like a child in the throws of a temper tantrum, kick, scream, yell all you want...Guess who won the Strike? So the Union must be doing something better than you.

He was lucky just to get the key...they must have liked him.

The brotherhood means working as fast as the most senior associate. Who cares if you're post-2003 and have no job protection, or have been working for 20 years and are stuck in a garage with associates that have 32 years seniority, you're still expected to do minimal work and not look like you're upstaging the others. Performance-based work is not what the Union rewards.

My EWA supervisor said he thinks it's a systemic culture thing. Apparently the new union employees get harrassed by the old union employees if they work too hard or do too much work. He was telling us how he had one new hire leave after only a couple of months because union people were keying his car because he refused to slow down and be lazy like the older union employees.

It's truly a Culture of Laziness from top to bottom, and anyone who refuses to be lazy gets harrassed. Pretty unbelievable.

17 minutes before end of tour???? Dude I'm on a slow decent right after my lunch, and then on final approach 11/2 hours prior to end of tour. I'm in my car, and on the down the road sipping on a cold one 17 minutes before tour ends....That guys is a hero.

I know you union people are uneducated, but you're apparently pretty stupid in the common sense department too.

our ewa manager had all sorts of stories about lazy union workers filing complaints if they called out for half-asswork. he said their answer to everything is to either call in sick or file a grievance.

he said their brains are hardwired to stop working at exactly 17 minutes prior to their shift ending, lol.

he was a really cool guy to work for, and he clearly appreciated finally having some employees who had a good attitude about working and didn't spend all their time trying to get out of doing stuff. i felt sorry for him because he was majorly dreading the thought of his team of union attitude problems coming back. he made it sound like he's more of a babysitter than a manager and was almost in disbelief that we would actually do our jobs without being prompted every 30 minutes.

My EWA mgr said the same thing. He equated the union workers to kindergartners (LAZY kindergartners). He said they care more about breaks and quittin' time than doing even a half-assjob.

We were talking about our employees in my BAU job, and he said "pick your worst HR nightmare employee and you'll see what I go through on a daily basis".

We had a laugh when he said getting the union workers to do their jobs is like trying to drag along a 150 lb Lab on a leash who won't get off it's assand walk.

Sounds like that's more reflective of management. If you treat your people like children expect them to not cooperate. If you treat them like valued workers they'll step up for you. Sorry that facts hurt your management buddy.

The OP's story is not all that different from what my EWA boss said. He basically said the union employees were belligerent little brats who refused to do anything more than the bare minimum. He said he gave up years ago asking them to do anything above and beyond the basics because they whine and file complaints anytime you ask them to get off their fat assand do something.

If the union did a good job and were team players they wouldn't have such a horrendous reputation.

@qux: EXACTLY. That is why hardly anyone respects the union. It's sad; that union sense of entitlement is an unfortunate trait that has been handed down through the generations since unions lost their reason for existence.

@iYU You didn't meet the tech's that make it all happen...luckily the customers do, and you can even ask that great manager you met, and Verizon Corporate, they will tell you the Customers rave about us, and call us the best in the business. Why do you think FIOS is such a hit.........The Manager? Hell No, it's the tech's that get it done everyday........don't believe me ask the Customer if you want ...WE make it happen.....We made it successful...Not them! .........The managers are Asswholes looking for trouble and getting in the way.

Yes the work performed by the EWA's was extremely exceptional by their standards. Our standards however are bit different and at the request of the company, the same company the praised your performance, the union has agreed to lift caps on overtime. Yes forced OT to make up for your sub par work and sub par effort. Like small children you must be praised for going potty in the potty. haha

EWA wife here. I went to stay with my hubby a couple of weekends (even though he was working), met some of the managers at his garage and I thought they were great. They came up from being techs, so knew their stuff, but we're also smart, funny, very likeable people. They helped my hubby out a lot and had genuine concern for your customers. If they didn't all live 4+ hours away, I'd be more than happy to hang out and BBQ with them.....

Also heard this time and again in our call center ewa where we outperformed the union workers AND had a good attitude. Even the janitorial crew said they dread the union coming back because they are disrespectful and don't pick up after themselves. Shame on you. What would your mama think?

Let's see, after one week they figure out how to remove a ladder from a rack, 3 more weeks to Lear how to carry it. One week to figure out what those cones were for, then used one. Once confronted with a trouble, make 3 phone calls, diagnosis help/what to do/turn back. Kiss customers butt and tell them it will be fixed when union techs return. 5 star service. Now how do I get this damn ladder back on the truck....time to phone a friend....doh!

EWA Supervisor is correct: If the EWA Supervisor was inside and the job required a computer, if IT EWA people were doing the Union work, most of them developed the on-line systems Union associates use , If you wrote it , you already know how it works ...

Manager in my are area was pulling his hair out, said the ewa folks we clueless. They kind of kept up until rain fell on day 4 and then all hell broke loose. He said they were falling behind every day after the first rain. He was begging for someone who knew how to fix something.

That is a culture THEY created.....The Management at Verizon right up to the directors level, is an insecure bunch of low educated, ego maniacs, with inferiority complexes. They, of all people, should not be the one's you listen to. If you want to know what's really going on, spend some more time there. They are pathological liars, they back stab each other They are lunatics....They cry the poor me, what am i to do song...but they are the one that created that toxic environment.

Just what we need, more people that have no clue of the job giving me tips. We actually heard a manager say the following. Instead of running six spans of two pair, just run two spans of six pair.

The best managers are the ones that could climb a pole. The guys that came up doing the job they now manage are better then guys who just get an education. Does that make sense, someone telling me what to do but has no clue what I do isn't effective.

Call center Director here....I can honestly say I'd prefer the EWA people manning my phones rather than the can't do attitude of union scum.

Oh please. They did the job for 6 weeks in nice weather. I'm sure they weren't held to the same standards. Let's see if they enjoyed the job in freezing cold weather. Your post is very self serving.
