Thread regarding AT&T Inc. layoffs

Wake Up!

All ATT wants is wireless and will tell current employees anything to keep the ball rolling until they can get to the point where the work is mostly contractor. Wireline is being dumped by Verizon and ATT to follow the millennials who only want to use cell phones.

With so many company's offering cell type service it wont be long before the goal is reached. the question is will ATT and Verizon survive. ATT has been spending big bucks to expand in Europe and other countries. Cost are lower and workers make less. Both company's dropped retirement and will soon push the employees left to the pay as you go medical.

Most wont believe it will happen to them. As for Direct TV, does anyone really think the work will go to employees when a contractor get less than $100.00 to do an install and they pay their own expenses. Sadly too many employees think they are safe and when they hear about others they think it must be something they did or their department was over staffed.

You wont hear the bell because it will be in the form of an email or recorded voice mail

Ok so we were told Monday the same story, " no down sizing expected in the group"

We are losing work and don't seem to be able to pick up any support from other groups. We thought we would be working with Mobility on the Tier 3 level but that seems to be moving to contractors.

OCATS will be gone if this continues. the OCATS field people are not in any better position.

Crucial to profits rather than productivity. What a load of crap. Well, since 90% of employees are not at Executive level, that smacks merely of gaining more compensation and stock dividend payoffs for them. Ugh. This company is despicable. I hope I am able to leave sooner rather than later at this rate. I fully expect to be fired for something odd or surplussed before the end of the year.

Reply to reply regarding outsourcing (meaning offshoring): The bulk of services AT&T provides are high profit margin. Any savings resulting from putting more Americans out of work will go to executives and shareholders. The company is literally profiting through your demise if your job is offshored. Offshoring is not essential to remaining competitive. That is just a weak justification for lining their pockets even more. No qualified US workers? Seriously? More lies...

My entire group was outsourced. I was 8 years shy of the rule of 75. Excellent performance ratings and was taking all training recommended for 2020.

Very interesting. The statements you give are exactly what my director is using. We did notice the " we don't see" change from "our department is not in jeopardy "

this is a technical support group and our work is dropping quick. We thought we would have mobility work but that has not been realized.

not good

HR is looking at the people who are close enough to the rule of 75 to dump without making it look like it is a directive from above. The early retirement offering in 2015 failed and now the only path is direct layoff with as little pain to the corporate cost as possible. One thing people who make the rule is retirement or medical cost to ATT. don't be surprised if enough people threaten law suits for the downsizing after telling people if they learn the tools needed for the 2020 line in the sand but are laid off anyway. ATT is quietly outsourcing jobs that can be done remotely including service, help desks and engineering support to either overseas or to contractors. Not many people think they will be impacted but go into shock when their managers start avoiding direct questions on layoffs. the latest official statement directed by HR for directors and above to use is "we don't see any headcount issues in our department" The statement " we don't see" is different from a few months ago because HR woke up and realized the mixed statements could lead to legal problems.

And yes my group was told the same statements and now are told 30% of the group will be "included in surpluses" Nice, looks like a summer vacation will be a bit early.

Having the 69.8 years on the rule of 75 did not help.

I was in your exact same shoes with less then 5 to reach the 75-rule. 20 years in and completed all the 2020 training with good MPP's and was surplused in March. Good luck and best thing you can do is hope luck falls your way and your name isn't chosen.

Any suggestion on how to survive the surplussing? I have less than 5yrs until I hit the rule of 75 and need to find a way to make it at least until that point. I'm in a group that is 99.6% contractors at present and just looking to survive by any means.
