What is funny is that the remaining 20% would be split between folks who are way too young for even 6+6 to do anything for them, and oldtimers with 30 years+ who just have to get those 20 extra hours every single week or the Earth would stop dead in its tracks...

You are correct as far as the 6 yrs of age and 6 yrs of time. That would give you 48 yrs old with 22 yrs of service.
You would not be able to retire because you would have to be at least 50 yrs old with 25 yrs service or 55 years old with 20 years service. You would need one of these parameters or you could be any age and have 30 years service to retire.
errr .. not likely 36,000 associates would take a 6 and 6. However there are likely several thousand that have 28 plus years that would very likely take a 6 and 6, with a lump sum.
As for the lump sum, unless one has a damn good money manager and works their investment everyday, the lump sum is not always the best way to go. It is generally considered to be more lucrative in the long haul, based on life expectancy to some degree, to take a monthly. As always, speak with your money manager.

A 6 and 6 would enable thousands to retire prior to a new company possibly buying us. Win-win for Verizon and the new buyer. Especially if the new buyer were Union friendly but needs a reduced work force.
