Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Very happy for union.

Now that union has won and wireless is also unionized, I am happy to see the path being paved for many of the management leadership to exit in humiliation, including several managers, directors, VPs.

I will stay out to support just 1 person, 180 + or - makes it easy.

" I wonder why they haven't tried in recent years"

My guess is that they presumed that failure was imminent. The pushback seen from the company when it came to unionizing wireless employees - let alone anyone else - was significant.

One thing to bear in mind...at the time that the union tried to penetrate lower-level management ranks, the head count of the unionized force within the Bell System across the country was close to 700K...and the effort still fell through the cracks.

Could it still be done, at least in some areas/titles which are not necessarily management per se, but simply "exempt" workforce that doesn't manage anyone in real life? Possibly, but not without a major struggle.

But in the end, what do I know? I'm just an overpaid, lazy, under-educated (thanks VZ for paying for my Master's) union-represented whale...

"They did reach out to management many years ago."

Late 70s if I recall correctly. MaBell aborted that baby real quick. A number of people got fired and everyone shut up.

must have missed that. Been with the company for 22 years - never was approached, nor anybody in our entire building

but, for some reason, unions never approach people in IT, legal, HR, sales, bus ops, and so forth. I always wondered why that was. I don't have an answer or even a theory - was just wondering.

Good question. Union should actively reach out to management employees to absorb them into union. Unions are good for American people and their jobs.

ever wonder why the union never approaches any office employees and offers to unionize them? Why is that exactly? Why have all of the EWAs never been asked to join the union over the years?

Any big journey starts with that first step. Wireless union contract is signed for the first time and you will see it go leaps and bounds in coming years.

Let's not get ahead of ourselves, only 175 wireless employees have been unionized. i would hate to think this was the purpose of keeping 39k people out to represent 175 people. Kind of like the old days in 1983 when divestiture was looming and we all wondered if we would have jobs and the eBoard member Jake (cant remember last name) was bragging about how he got 60 cable TV techs in the union.
