Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Ever wonder why your Union Contracts have always been 3 year contracts?

I worked for Verizon some time ago for years and I left when I had a chance. I'm not anti union or pro company. I am however a person who understands that there are two sides it all and neither is really looking out for YOU. I use to wonder why the contracts were only 3 years. I used to wonder many things and when I asked I could never get a straight answer out of either union or company. So here is what I have found to share with you. These unions know what it take to get rid of them both from the company and it's workers (which YOU CAN do). Here is the info on when you can File for a Decertification election to get rid of your current union........

WHEN CAN I FILE FOR A DECERTIFICATION ELECTION?

If the contract between the union and your employer falls into either of the following categories, you cannot immediately file for a decertification election:

Petitions for a decertification election cannot be filed for one year after a union wins an NLRB conducted election.

Petitions for a decertification election cannot be filed during the first three years of a collective bargaining agreement, except for during a certain 30-day “window period.” In most workplaces, the “window period” for filing a decertification petition with the NLRB occurs 60 to 90 days prior to the expiration date or three year anniversary of the contract, whichever comes first. In the health care industry (such as hospitals), the “window period” occurs 90 to 120 days prior to the expiration date of the contract or three year anniversary of the contract, whichever comes first.

A decertification petition can also be filed any time after a contract expires or becomes more than three years old. However, if your employer and the union enter into a successor contract, the new contract will begin another three year “contract bar.” Thus, if you miss the “window period” for filing a petition for a decertification election, you may have to wait for another three years to request a decertification election.

Notice it says you can NOT file during the first three years of a collective bargaining agreement. Well doesn't this just chap your ass So basically you have a right to file you just can't do it because the company and the union have agreed to keep the contract so short that you don't have enough time to file all the proper paperwork. I am sorry but there are no innocent parties here folks.

I remember that's exactly what they said when that contract came through and the same for the wireless side as well.

They hired many people after 2003,that was the agreement. The company would hire dues paying members but wanted control of their future. Both sides are businesses, maybe the union thought, get them in and we can bargain for them later.

"oh the 2003 contract where you lost EVERYTHING in that contract."

We haven't lost everything. We did lose one HUGE thing: layoff protection for people hired after 2003. That's one of the reasons why I'll always say that Sedenberg knew how to get things done, even if his vision of the company at the time directly hurt my own well-being.

" I don't even know why that contract was even approved. "

FTR, I voted against it. I can only presume that a lot of people at the time simply didn't understand the consequences...

this post wasn't a post to support getting rid of the union. It was just trying to show that the union has it's own agenda just as much as the company does. I am tired of listing to the same crap being thrown in everyones face by the unions. You all say the same thing over and over. you all sound like a broken record. This would be fine if what you said was your own words but it is on your own words or your own thoughts it is nothing more then what the union has told you to say. If we line you up in a line and put Chris Shelton in front and had him walk off a cliff, you all would follow him. People need to stand up to the union and start asking the right questions out of their union leaders and Electing leadership that understands rather then just accepting what is thrown in front of you at election time. I know tons of people who couldn't or didn't even vote in the last election. As well as people who just voted because they felt that is what they needed to do. It's the membership that is part of the problem with the union today. They have been made to feel that they don't really have a say in anything because it all gets done anyways.

"Better yet, let the workforce today vote to re-certify the Union since no one today took part of the original vote then we can see where people stand."

You do understand that if one were to decertify the union the next contract - if there ever was one which I highly doubt - would have to be written from scratch?

You do understand that some of our rights in many areas were bargained for as far back as 1943 and that we wouldn't stand a chance of a snowball in hell when it comes to getting anywhere close to what we have today if we were to start all over again?

The unions representing us leave a lot to be desired. But all the other options available to us are far worse. By so many margins that it's not even funny.

oh the 2003 contract where you lost EVERYTHING in that contract. I know entire Fios centers that were completely staffed with almost all new hires none of which have job security because of that 2003 contract. 5 year contract and You got NOTHING out of it. I don't even know why that contract was even approved. so many union members I still hear bitching about the 2003 contract.

"I use to wonder why the contracts were only 3 years."

FYI, the 2003 contract was a five-year-deal.

The upcoming one appears to be a four-year-pact. Not that you care.

Unions that really care about their membership and are smart enough to keep the other side on their toes - something that doesn't exist in this country - are big on one-year-contracts. It works for everyone involved. For a slew of reasons. However, a proper regulatory environment - another thing that doesn't exist in this country - is required...
