Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

EWA'ers, you got to enjoy a nice fat paycheck for 6 weeks. The same amount of money that our members have the opportunity to make all year long.

Now the real question is this... will you finally see the light and organize, so that you too may enjoy good pay, benefits and retirement? Or will you be happy going back to your cubicle, making less than you deserve, having no pension and paying too much for healthcare?

"You realize most people pay $400-$800 a paycheck or $800-$1600 a month for a decent healthcare plan?"

In truth, this will largely depend on where one resides. Some areas maintain better offerings than the others. I was able to come up with a coverage very close to what my family has under our current VZ plan for about $500/month. Cross the state border and the figure more than doubles. Some serious shopping around was required, though.

"Wasn't forced overtime one of the things the union was complaining about?"

Yes it was and hopefully it will be gone by the time we come back. But to a different point: there is definitely an "opportunity" to work a ridiculous amount of OT if one chooses to, even without getting forced. The fact of the matter is that by VZ's refusal to hire permanent employees while neglecting the plant for decades AND adding FiOS into the mix, the amount of work available has largely surpassed what can be accomplished by a 40K strong workforce - unionized or not - on a normal 40hr/week schedule, no matter how competent technicians and/or 1st levels in these areas might be.

seriously, you realize that the health care plan for vz is dirt cheap, I think only educational institutions have a plan that is even as close or as cheap. You realize most people pay $400-$800 a paycheck or $800-$1600 a month for a decent healthcare plan? The verizon plan ranges from 200-400 a month at most for a family. Not to mention it is such a gold plated plan that you couldn't buy the plan if you wanted to from an insurance company at any cost. Either way, if the deal works out for you guys and its what you wanted, congratulations. We all know its going to go horribly bad in the coming years, and more than likely the entire wireline business will be sold as quickly as they can....Yes Wireless needs wireline, but they don't need to own it.

We make twice as much as the union people without having to work overtime to do it.

It was just gravy to be getting 16k pay checks the last month. You would have made about 3k for the same work I did.

"No one in my shop will be seeing any OT this year."

Presuming that you're really a 1st level - which I doubt - and maintain that attitude after the disaster that is leftover from EWAs to your craft to deal with, I can pretty much guarantee that you'll be gone by Labor Day.

Their numbers won't go up, yours will go down and you'll be out. Do you really want that to happen?

OP is crazy! Verizon has some of the best benifits I've ever had in a company. I make a great living and have noting to worry about. If I get Riffed, my skills and talent will land me a new high paying job in less than 30 days. Unlike you Union folks, you're all fat and lazy and no company would hire you making the same amount of money you do get at VZ.

Organize??? AS in band together to bully companies into paying the highest wage for the least amount of work, by workers who are literally un-hireable anywhere else??? You realize that unions exist to protect the lazy and worthless right??? No thanks! I make more than you, because I am worth more than you!
