Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

A company with a union is like a marriage.

Though you may not like your spouse and fight with them constantly, in the end, it all comes down to the old saying "It's cheaper to keep her." Sure, you could shoot for a divorce but all of your dirty laundry is going to end up in the public's eye and you'll be financially devastated between the lawyers (labor consultants) and alimony (buyouts) while your image becomes a stigma everywhere and you may wind up with another partner who's worse (contractors).

I'm surprised that the V-Team braintrust hasn't figured it out already.

No need to pay union strikers any buyout. They won't get any offers. Union workers who don't report to work..... they don't get paid..jobs. That's why Verizon didn't negotiate any longer... until the government made them. They want the worthless overpaid union staff gone as soon as possible.

This is more like a marriage in a country where divorce is not legally allowed. Verizon has long wanted a divorce and has been actively trying to get out the marriage for quite some time, but the Labor Department is forcing them to undergo marriage counseling as a last resort. There are always exceptions, but it doesn't usually work in the long run.

Maybe the Secretary of Labor can force Verizon to swallow hard and the unions to bend over and the two sides will be stuck in this unhappy marriage for 3 more years. But, the writing is on the wall. This marriage is going to end sooner or later.

The company / union relationship is like a very bad marriage where on the one hand you've got the union members who do the very least they can do to get the maximum return, just keeping the other side barely satisfied enough to not look elsewhere. And on the other side you have the company doing all it can to make life difficult for the other side because of the feeling the union doesn't quite deserve what they are getting. I know a lot of marriages like that. Come to think of it, I'd bet many of the marriages of the union folks are exactly like that.

It's cheaper to get rid of the union. That's why Verizon wants to offer 60k buyouts.

OP, marriages are not meant to be that way. Maybe union marriages are like that, but normal people have love and respect in their marriages with each trying to do all they can to make the other happy.

And the EWA people are like battered wives. Lowell beats them, humiliates them, abuses them ..... and they just go back for more. No wonder they all wear those fashion jeans with the knees blown out.
