"Nobody can afford to. Wireline worth $40-50b easy. "

Well, if you split the East Coast into two separate deals - by districts - it becomes more palatable financially. Frontier gets 2-13 first and then follows up by 1 before the contract ends. That's the only reason that I could think of VZ agreeing to a 4-year deal.

No insider info, pure speculation on my part.

We were going to be sold sooner rather than later, but the two (Vz and Ftr) effed the last sale up. So now it will take a little longer for approval

We are not going to be sold. Nobody can afford to. Wireline worth $40-50b easy. Only one is Google and I don't think they want us. Vz deals with us for a loooong time.

"And the new owners of VZ Wireline (when Lowell sells it off) will tear the Union a new one"

How did you figure that one out? The contract stays in place regardless of who buys the wireline. Once it expires we'll negotiate with the new owner. That's exactly what has taken place in all of the unionized segments of former VZ territories that were taken over by Frontier, as well as Fairpoint until they (FairPoint) filed for bankruptcy.
