Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Ran into an old boss, spoke for a while

Ran into and old boss, one of the few good ones. First thing he ask was how I was doing, then asked about family. He also asked about the guys from the garage and the old gang. Didn't brag about overtime , or the amount of work they are doing. Not the type of guy that enjoys these things. At the end he said he didn't have a good feeling. They are moving towards business as usual. Said the company is fully committed to keeping craft out. He hopes we come back tomorrow but feels this is going to last longer then 89. He said even if we do come back sooner we will be working side by side with the temp work force. No warm and fuzzy feeling at all.

I spoke to my boss as well and he's worried for his job since he has no one to supervise.

"I promise you, though, that the legal team already know about it and has 500 ways to negate it."

Ah, the old Goebbels approach...didn't really work for Nazis during Battle Of Britain, or invasion of the USSR. What makes you think that it will work here?

BTW, you do know how he ended up, right?

This post is speculation based upon what I’ve been seeing going on around me and back at my BAU position…

I think your old boss is dead right. Verizon is not standing still during the negotiations. It will not be much longer before Verizon will see itself as staffed up and ready to go. This is not speculation… you’d have to be blind to miss it…. No matter where you stand.

We will not know them, but Verizon leadership has staffing levels and dates in mind. My guess would be August, but maybe as early as end of June. Prior to this, Verizon will take the unions back as long as they can do it economically. Subsequent to this, the unions will be redundant. The details and definitions will not matter. Verizon will exploit all loopholes, and play to the edge of all rules. The unions will not be returning. You can cite any previous legal actions you want claiming that it is illegal or circumvents Verizon’s plan…. I promise you, though, that the legal team already know about it and has 500 ways to negate it.

If the union leadership has ANY intention of returning you guys to work, they need to come to an agreement SOON. And, yes, it’s on the union leadership. At some point, Verizon will only see the talks as a stalling tactic (if they aren’t already)

jst i agree... although we havent seen a strike of this duration in over 25 years so it would seem reasonable that the company needs to be prepared for the long haul no matter what. 3 more weeks or 3 more months. I dont think it really matters at this point. I do have to admit that i hope for a resolution soon. On my side of things there are only so many EwA employees i can trust.. and i dont fault them. Its just this isnt their backround talent and i fear what the Temp workforce will look like even more. Just an honest assesment.

just another speculation you chatted with old boss.

Nobody knows anything at this point.

I myself want to have any hint or something but it's meaningless really.

"All I know is that this company has never spent the amount of money it has on EWA training and hiring replacements as they are this time around. They are literally pushing every button that they can. "

Yes, this.

This strike is like no other....the commitment of VZ to strike a big blow appears to have come up a few notches. If anyone doubted Lowells dislike of the union, they neednt doubt anymore. He is going to get what he wants no matter the cost and it seems as though he has the backing of the board as well. We hear talk about union members having "war chests" set aside for riding out a strike....but who know how many billion are in the VZ war chest for this......

Sounds like another EWA BS post. Going to be a long one, staying out forever. Need to cross now. The union will never, ever, work side by side with scabs.

True. Nobody knows for sure. All I know is that this company has never spent the amount of money it has on EWA training and hiring replacements as they are this time around. They are literally pushing every button that they can. No one who has seen the prior strikes can ever remember the company being this committed as evidenced by the money they have spent and continue to spend.

The Secretary of Labor is trying to throw the unions a lifeline. If that fails, the NLRB is the last chance. If the union cannot force Verizon to change course in one of those two forums, this thing is going the distance. Sorry for the union folks because I think their leaders promised more than they could deliver.

im a manager and i havent heard anything about the union having to work side by side with contract workers.. could this be a southern thing in the right to work states? I have heard about the companies commitment .. but it was more to the effect of a more flexible contract and not of breaking the union. So i could see the company still having room for compromise as long as the union does as well.

Every manager, etc. has a different take; however, they are in the same boat with everyone else in that they don't know anything... Business as usual will be the course, regardless, because the company has to execute their contingency plan until a deal is in place. Nice story but nothing to hang your hat on...

Yes, side by side is absolutely what Ive heard as well (as a best case scenario for union guys). Worst case neednt be discussed.

Im not sure how the side by side thing will work though.....I just cant picture folks getting along. The contractors are going to be going like gangbusters (since theyll be paid by production) and this will create friction with the union.
