Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Why CWA declined offer

CWA Local 2204

Many of you have asked why we didn't take the deal offered from the company yesterday. The following is the reason. It is a list of bullet points put together by the bargaining team.

Specifics from yesterday's Proposal

· Job Security

Job security would remain in place for those hired prior to 2003 provided the union agrees to increase the mileage people can be moved from 35 to 50 miles, and force transfers requiring home relocation, permanent transfers requiring home relocation and the company wants complete control over where and when they offer a Special Enhanced Income Plan, which will lead to those jobs being performed by contractors

· Significant retiree healthcare increases

· New hires would not receive any retiree healthcare at all.

· 11 Centers are still on the list to be closed, shipping people up to 150 miles away from their current location.

· Freezing the Pensions, tying the 2016 Mortality Table to the Pension fund from this point on

· Changes to the healthcare plan, including deductibles

· Introducing a Formulary to the healthcare. The company will decide which drugs you can get based on their cost, regardless of their effectiveness or your doctor’s recommendation

· Call sharing that does not promise to maintain existing centers and gives the company complete freedom to route calls however they choose

· Increasing the flexibility of their ability to send calls to contractors, which positions our members for a surplus or layoff

· There will be no Corporate Profit Sharing in 2016, paid out in 2017

· There will be no retro pay for the last year of working without a contract

· Company is trying to sell this agreement by offering 400 jobs without any promises of keeping current levels of employees

· Even though the company has modified sending people out of town for 60 days, the intent is clear to be able to have a traveling work force in the states that are clustered together

Issues the Union has brought up

· They have not addressed any of the forced overtime issues at all

· They have not addressed our issues with Electronic Monitoring and Evaluative Observations

NO word of union accepting any offer, all rumors.

The union doesn't want electronic monitoring? Why? So they can slack off or do a bad job with no evidence? Why else would they care about that?

I'm a little upset the union is accepting this. I won't cross because that is suicide either way. Your hated by everyone and in order to get paid you have to resign from the union which leaves you no protection when we come back. I know for sure you will have no job without union backing. Stuck between a rock and hard place.

Its crazy to see how many corporate supporters there are who also support a "race to the bottom" these corporations are shooting for across the board for their entire American workforce when it comes to wages, benefits and retirement. I don't know about you, but i don't want to spend my golden years being a greeter at Wal-Mart just to make ends meet. We should all be supporting higher standards for each other and our future. When you are already in the big greedy club these fat cats are in, they have no worries or care in the world and will get to retire rather nicely. The rest of you aren't in that big club and will never be, so quit defending their greed if you personally don't have a dog in the race

There is issues of forced transfers and relocations and shipping call center people 150 miles away, on their own dime. Your cherry picking.

I love the union guy, of which I am one. Sign this or i am crossing, really? That same guy would find something to bitch about if we signed as is. You can't have it both ways, fight for a good contract, it's time we stop giving in. We caved before and paid the price, hang tough. Many Techs had the chance to become a manager, you passed, live with your decision.

It's shocking to me that 40,000 people are about to lose their jobs over the crap in the OP.

The issue about the healthplan drugs is common in the vast majority of healthplans these days. It's there to enforce using generics where possible; if a specific medicine is not on the approved list, all the patient as to do is have the doctor sign a letter indicating why the medication is required and they will end up covering it.

New Hires don't received retirement medical benefits from any company these days. You're risking people's jobs over THAT?

Sorry, but no company is going to guarantee keeping call centers open these days. With the newer technology available (which Verizon sells) it doesn't make sense to keep brick and mortar call centers open in some cases. This is another ridiculous clause to risk people's jobs over.

Freezing the pensions: Most companies don't give pensions at all, and virtually no companies give pensions AND 401k like Verizon. Again, another incredibly stupid reason to risk the job of these 40k union people.

Electronic Monitoring: Again, the union leaders don't seem to understand technology. Monitoring of both call centers and moving vehicles are among the newest and fastest growing technologies being deployed. Verizon a huge seller of both technologies, and to expect Verizon not to "eat it's own dogfood" and use these technologies to help protect the company's interests and minimize liabilities is stupid. People who do a good job don't have to worry about being monitored; it's the lazy and incompetent workers who would have a problem.

Reading this list of the demands it's clear that the union is doing a tremendous disservice to the VZ union employees who are about to be locked out. And if they lose their jobs there isn't a company out there who provides this list of demands (not to mention no company is going to pay these people the same high salaries they get at VZ).

I thought maybe the union had some understandable demands that weren't being met, but this list of issues is ridiculous. Good luck getting Verizon or anyone else to offer what is being demanded, and good luck getting the public to be sympathetic to a bunch of people demanding a list of luxuries that is above and beyond what the average American gets at work.

qcu ,

What was posted was a list of company demands.

90% of these are unrealistic demands by the union in my opinion. Stop blaming the rising costs of health care on the corporation as well. Vz gave a ton of givebacks in the contract. Negotiating isn't about meeting your list of demands.

Definition of irony. Union says company proposal was rejected because it was just bullet points. Union turns around and provides just bullet points to us. Two more weeks and I cross.

Take it and shove it Marc, I can't wait for them to say we have a "New" best and final. Lol, clueless executives running the company into the ground.
