Regional Bargaining Report 64

Wednesday, April 27, 2016

As reported yesterday, the Mid Atlantic Regional Bargaining committee will be meeting with the Company tomorrow afternoon. This is day 15 of the strike and will only be the third meeting with the Company since the strike was called. The other 2 meetings yielded no agreement. No one should be convinced that this meeting will either.

We need to dispel any rumors circulating by management that we will be returning to work by Friday. Our strike will remain in full effect until we reach a fair settlement to this contract.

Healthcare coverage for over 50,000 Mid-Atlantic members, spouses and their children will be canceled by Verizon beginning May 1st. CWA has pledged that no striking member or family member will go without medically necessary health care during the strike. CWA will pay for all necessary medical/hospital expenses incurred on May 1, 2016 or later. Members should be contacting their Local regarding issues of health care coverage.

What do you think will happen when you take your kid to the doctor or ER and tell them your uninsured but maybe your union will pay?

People this is a strike !!!! Suck it up and think about how good it is to have these jobs and how most other working class people suffer without half the benefits we have. If you have a real health issue you will have help. Stop being so spoiled and realize we are in a fight for our lives here. And if you cross, good luck with that. You are union and if you are not with us then you are against us.

They definitely are not paying ALL medical bills -- just the ones that are emergencies. There was a notice out several days ago (can't remember where I saw it but it's out there) urging union members to move all unnecessary medical and dental appointments to later since only emergencies and critically necessary procedures will be paid for.

They word it like "don't worry, we'll cover you" but then when it comes down to it are only going to pay for the things they deem as necessary/emergency.

Reading that update on CWALocal 2204, they have italicized and bolded the word Necessary when talking about paying for medical benefits... Does this strike anyone else as shady/ominous? Who decides the necessity? The union? My doctor? Some beancounter in la-la land? This is scary, might be forced to resign and cross on Friday depending on tomorrow's news.

@eat. Maybe, CWA is united but IBEW is feeling a bit left behind as usual. Strike pay, union sponsored medical, NY has guaranteed unemployment after a certain number if weeks, CWA has a btter contract with double time for OT. We are all out here in the same struggle but It seems like IBEW is getting thr short end of the stick.

From the tone of that update, it sure doesn't sound like the union will be back Monday...

Old Verizon games. Try to divide and conquer. That tactic doesn't work anymore. We are all united.

This could be the huge 1989 mistake all over again. 17 weeks of pay and OT gone to claim victory for keeping health care which at the time was a fraction of what it is now. Clearly paid for by the strike for a decade or more. I can see it happening because most members of CWA and Local union hall Boards were not around at that time. I certainly hope not because it sucked.

Is CWA going to cover health care for the striking IBEW members as well or are we just going to be screwed? How about the IBEW'S non existent strike fund? Any, word on that? IBEW and CWA need to sit down and discuss these issues before you have a few thousand more people crossing the picket line come Monday! While you are at it discuss how we are going to sync up the CWA/IBEW contracts at every level in this new contract. We should all be getting double time after 9 hours and all day Sunday, access to the TTA program, same holidays off etc.. Shared sacrifice, shared contracts !!!!
