Nope. There are still labor laws in place all over this country although many would like to see them gone altogether.
There's a lot that VZ can do, but "what they want" is not a realistic description of where things legally stand.

No impasse possible because there has been a strike called. Impasse only happens during bargaining
Actually, it can and will happen. Once the contract ran out and negotiations stalled on the entire process, that allows the company to declare an impasse. Once that happens, it is legally possible to begin implementing. Because the union has rejected the entire new proposal from mgt, impasse is a legally sanctioned right.

I agree with H6F7mpt-iec. It was a weird strike date to begin with. If union leadership really planned for long strike, they'd start the strike at the beginning of the month so that member can have longer period of benefit. It seems to me they planned for 2-3 weeks of strike which they don't have to use strike fund.

Once this labor issue settled, I'd expect to see some new traditional wireline side of the Verizon is sold at the end of the year. I believe this labor issue was the only remaining road block of the sale.
VES already has been stripped to the bone. 85% of my team is VDSI. They tried to sell us to centurylink (while promising us that it was not the case) but century wouldnt buy us. Frontier is having a lot of trouble with the vzt migration. Might make it tough for then to try to buy more vzt now.
Union leadership will agree to return to work. Should be hearing an announcement in the next day possibly. Issue is that the union will have to forgo the current contract so the company can begin the cost cuts. I think the union leadership knows that many, many employees will cross the line before the 30th because people just cannot afford for their families to be without healthcare. If that happens, the union is busted so the leaders will claim "victory" in getting back to work, even though they have nothing to show for the strike. It was political gamesmanship to try and cash in on the NY election, and the union played the wrong hand. Now, both union and mgt will be reduced to recover the cost of the strike. Sad situation with no winners. Except the executives. They still make millions either way.

It won't be long. I think VZ will follow their plan and divest the rest of the states like they did FL, TX and CA. They have no interest in that business any longer as their only concern is the wireless side of the house. VES will be cut apart or outsourced, and wholesale business will be sold. This will give the execs the cash infusion they need to keep expanding 5G. In all honesty, VES. Wholesale, and the rest of the wireline business isn't even a thought in their minds on a daily basis. After the strike, you will see major layoffs to get the parts of the business right-sized for selling off. There are no winners here. Union and mgt alike will get the shaft.
