I would jump at Union membership. As management in fGTE I had to tolerate verbal abuse with the manager screaming right into my face. When the second level went on vacation I was "ordered" to go around to his house and pick up the newspapers and dispose of them due to second level forgot to cancel home deliveries.
I was pushed onto the early shift Monday thru Thursday, but Friday the "old timers" wanted a longer weekend so I was made to work the late shift. Despite a wealth of knowledge, gained outside of fGTE, and with several certifications to my credit, I was passed over for a supervisor position because everyone liked my co worker, Kelly, who apparently had "people skills" and chatted to everyone and always arranged the incredible important " pot lucks." Oh joy, my job security and workload increased, as I not only did my job, but Kelly's supervisor job too. Life, as management, at fGTE was wretched and miserable.
I would have, and still would be, cock a hoop happy, if I was blessed to be one of life's "chosen people."
Union membership? Yes please, Thank you very, very much.
