Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Wife concerned about Union husbands job

My husband is a union member who is currently on strike. We have 3 children and do not have much money in the savings and what little we have is being used up quickly. My husband is too proud to cross the line, but has recently heard rumors that Verizon is in the process of hiring and traing contractors to replace the striking workforce. It sounds like VErizon is dead set on busting the union. I pray this ends soon. I wish the union and Verizon would agree on a contract now. Even if they sign the current offer it would still be a great pay job with great benefits. I worry that my husband will end up with no job at Verizon. I pray this ends soon for everyone's sake!

They Do Not Have to take back striking workers first if they hire replacement workers and make them permanent.

The Right to Permanently Replace Strikers

Later in Labor Law I, law students learn some of the intricacies of labor law. The NLRA prohibits employers from firing employees who go on strike. However, an employer may hire replacement workers if it desires to continue to operate during a strike. (4) Furthermore, the employer has the right to make these replacements permanent at any time during the strike. Once the employer makes the replacements permanent, employees have no right to return to their jobs if they decide to end the strike. Likewise, employees who crossed the picket line and filled the jobs of strikers are entitled to keep those jobs after the end of the strike, even if the “crossover” employees have less job seniority than returning strikers.(5) Instead, strikers have the “right” to be placed upon a preferential hiring list which entitles them to be rehired if vacancies open at the employer. These principles mean that a striking employee with decades of seniority risks both his or her job and all the benefits of that seniority.

Fran already signaled to Wall street during the earnings call that it may impact earnings in second quarter, and the stock reflected the potential impact. These things are not said by accident.

My opinion, at a minimum, they are prepared to go thru June 30th (end of the second quarter) and I suspect beyond that....... take it for what its worth no matter what side of the line you are on.

The company is not giving up on this, and they've demonstrated that by not budging an inch since the strike started. They are planning on this strike going on months if it has to, but apparently are hiring at a fast enough rate that they can meet a lockout date of mid-May.

I feel for the OP here because this is the first strike IMO that very well may end with thousands and thousands of people losing their job. In prior strikes wireline was the major revenue generator for the company, but now as a result of new technologies and more competition the wireline part of the company doesn't generate significant income anymore so the company isn't under any pressure to shorten the strike.

Buckle up everyone -- this strike has no end in sight. My thoughts go out to all the strikers and their families as well as the EWA employees. I'm afraid that a lot of peoples' lives are about to be uprooted.

Even if they hire workers when we do finally go back they have to take us first not the temporary workers ... There is a lot of laws protecting union workers... So don't worry about him not getting his job back

@mfm, no it's not preaching from behind a keyboard. Every contract members are advised to start saving money as soon as a new contract is signed. If you blow all of that extra money, that in many cases we are forced to make, then take a good look in the mirror. In the meantime, keep on praying.

If this a legit post, my first inclination would be to go into your 401k. Loan, withdrawal, do whatever you need to pay bills. If that is not an option start a GoFund Me account if there is no available work out there for the two of you to cover the bills. If he crosses the line he will have no union representation and they will probably end up firing him for some BS charge when the the strike is winding down.

@savesome$$$ It's easy to sit there and preach from behind a keyboard, but you, nor I, knows the OP's circumstances. She just needs to keep her head up and try to support her husband as much as she can. It will end one way or the other, making us all stronger individuals.

Bottom line to everyone. If you are not smart enough to save money over a 3 year period, then you have no one to blame but yourself. We are often given or forced endless amounts of overtime. Just $50 a week saved for a 150 week period gives you a nice little strike fund. The op is more than likely a VZ Teamer Troll, but if that's not the case, don't pray for a contract, start being more responsible as a parent and adult.

When on strike you do what you have to do to survive . Union help out union. When a union member hears about a few job offerings he tells his brothers and sisters then they get in and take care of more union people.

You can take a 401k Ioan if it gets that bad. Payments start in 30 days. Best of luck and remember this strike will be over hopefully soon.

If you have been through many strikes, than you know about working off the books in tech.

Been through many strikes. Its not easy but with help from family and friends every little bit helps. Some union people get jobs working days, evenings or nights to fill the gap. Some will get unemployment and some have a union strike fund. Where there is a will there is a way.

@H61tsUM Sorry. But this really sounds like something written by one of Reed's HR trolls. The company is on the ropes and one manager was already seriously injured today because of a lack of training. If the union does not close this deal theny your three kids will always be hungry.

This company does not care about American families at all.
