Verizon Scabs: You Can Run but You Can't Hide
Direct Action by 1101 members get scabs kicked out of hotels all over town. Verizon strikebreakers in NYC just can't catch a break. Every time management thinks they found a place to hide, direct action by CWA Local 1101 strikers gets them tossed out like garbage. Roving pickets have gotten Verizon kicked out of more than a dozen hotels in Manhattan.
First, Verizon was caught dispatching scabs from the Westin. Hundreds of strikers set up a picket line, including an inflatable rat on loan from Teamsters Local 814. The Westin threw them out!
Strikers moved on to the Sheraton where another rowdy picket line and support from the Hotel Trades Council got the Verizon scabs booted again. A few days later the Renaissance hotel kicked out Verizon too.
The company tried going underground and started dispatching scabs and equipment from a storage unit on the West Side Highway. Another picket line; another showdown; and Verizon scab dispatchers were once again in the street.
With the company's dispatch operations in disarray, strikers set their sights on the scabs' sleeping arrangements.
On April 22, Local 1101 strikers hit ten midtown hotels that were housing scabs who had hidden their Verizon affiliation by booking their rooms individually - not in a corporate room block.
The Hotel Trades Council spoke to management. Apparently, they got the message.
The Union hotels agreed to ID strikebreakers and cancel their rooms. Now Verizon is trying to hide their scabs in non union hotels. Those hotels will continue getting "CWA wake up calls" until they too toss out the garbage.
