The union employees pay as of the previous contract. Wireline is being sold off because American cellular manages the towers and circuits to them. They are part of a union as well but managed by American Cellular. I know this because I work for them, we manage the wireless towers. Whoever the CEO is, is gutting America of decent jobs, idk why everyone is so against one another (union or non) heck our kids play at the same parks and go to the same schools. Seriously were acting childish

@ ysn..... Level 3 doesn't have much fiber in the ground. They piggyback on our network. Level 3 sells retail to a customer then Verizon wholesales a fiber circuit to level 3..... Without Vz wireline in northeast.... Level 3 would have to pay millions, if not billions to run fiber to every existing cell site in the northeast. Verizon wireless just leased space in every Verizon wireline co for more circuits in future.
The Wireless company can get it's backhaul circuits from Level 3 at less cost. If Verizon Wireline went away tomorrow the wireless company would be fine.
And to the person who says the union winning is so important I disagree. The union employees are already overpaid and are in a dying part of the business. Any concessions the already-overpaid union people get will be at the expense of the non-union employees. A win for the union is a huge loss for Verizon and it's non-union employees.
Verizon simply can't afford to throw money at union employees who make over $60k a year (plus both a pension and matched 401k and free health benefits) answering phones in a call center

The West was very profitable, some of the highest profit margins per employee in the country.
If the union loses EVERYONE loses. It will be just the start of the snowball down the hill for everyone. It is because of the unions that there are safe conditions in the workplace, decent wages, a forty hour week and overtime pay, holidays, for some weekends off, healthcare, paid vacations, sick days the list goes on. Interesting the disrespect toward Verizon employees by the company when they refer to them as "workers" instead of employees. In other words, the "WORKERS" are only TOOLS for CEO and upper management to have huge salaries on the backs of their "WORKER BEES" and their families. If Verizon didn't spend all the money on full page ads every day spewing false information against their employees they would not have any problems giving them a fair contract. This snowball is coming for all of you if Verizon employees don't get a contract.

How can I get a job at Verizon? I've been looking for work for months, and I'm having a tough time even getting interviews. I have a degree, a good background and experience. If these people don't want to work, I will gladly take their jobs even if only temporary. Any suggestions anyone on who I should contact?
Don't forgot our wireline also has over 10000 Verizon cell sites on its network. Without wireline from Verizon no wireless profits..

That article from the Huffington post is union propaganda. I read it and it makes no sense.
Verizon makes virtually all of it's profits from wireless, that is a fact. Union people don't like that fact because they want to believe that they have more leverage than they do. If the wire line business was profitable then Verizon wouldn't be selling huge chunks of it to Frontier all over the country. But the bottom line is that FIOS and POTS lines aren't big parts of the company's income so the union really has no leverage.
They can fire people who don't show up to work after a certain amount of time. And they can lock out the workers after a certain amount of time. I think one of the previous posters was suggesting that the company is planning to do just that and they have the resources to do it. If the company has already put it's proposals on the table and isn't budging off of them, it's a good bet that they plan to go through all the legal timelines necessary to dispose of the people who won't come to work and put new people in their place.

Verizon can hire temps and contractors. They, however, can't legally lay off the present striking workforce. That's not how labor laws - as well as contractual law - work.
Verizon's mantra that only 7% of their profit comes from the wireline side becomes questionable once one reads this article:

Then again, both the company and the union have maintained less-than-stellar relationship with truth for years now...
The company seems to be planning for this to go on months. It looks like they are already interviewing candidates to replace the union workers. There are rumors going around of a lockout date of May 20.
I don't know what the union plans are, but I'd say the Verizon side is planning to take the strike out as long as it needs to go and replace the workers that don't show up for work. And Verizon can do this because the wireline business only accounts for a pittance of their overall revenue and profits. Financially if the wireline business stopped tomorrow if would have little to no effect on the companies earnings since 95% comes from wireless.

Verizon can outlast the union. When the benefits quit and CWA does not want to give up anymore of their precious strike fund money they will figure a way to come back and say THEY WON.
