If you have marketable skills and experience, you will be fine if you get laid off. If you let your skills go stale (i.e. printing press operator, buggy maker or telephone line), you are at fault for not having a job in the future.
Unless your children own their own business they will have very little input when they work for someone else or fa company. Are you so blind that you don't see very good people losing their job due to the salary they make. Unless your also teaching your children to kiss ass.

I can not find any logical reason union would go for strike while union workers work without new contract. Their old contract is pretty good one and honored now. If union gors for strike, it just means end of old and good contractor.
I am pretty sure union will not get new contractor better or even equal to current one with strike considering what upper management is trying.
