I wonder who AT&T purchased this software from. If they built it themselves, I doubt it will be able to scale

We didn't write much of ECOMP, it was outsourced overseas. It only has a fraction of the designed functionality at this point. We are still more than a decade behind the real tech companies in this type of stuff.
People forget that Google has been 100% SDN with multi terrabyte software switching with all sorts of service orchestration for years.
The real benefit of ECOMP is the ability to manage more network with less people.
That is exactly right. This directtv deal is a looser sucking in a lot of cash which could be used in getting more and more households to the net by providing in expensive fiber. Imagine how much revenue can be generated with millions of households all connected. Once you have everyone connected you can charge for other companies for streaming their continent to the households you yourself do not need to provide any video content yourself just charge others to do it. You control all the connections.
AT&T has developed this unhealthy obsession with the Cloud and software. Trying to become the next Apple or Google or something. We need to "pivot" our focus to connecting people better than anyone else. We need to invest in the GigaPower service and 5G.
If outsourcing development to an offshore vendor means AT&T developed it. Then yeah, I guess we did. However, in most cases, ECOMP doesn't work yet.
Don't be fooled, Google and Amazon have been doing this type of service orchestration for a decade. We aren't going anything new here. This is just marketing.
