I would not count on what you ex boss said. Some says something like that to feel better themselves. I am not saying there is zero possibility though. I have seen folks come back over and over. But timing really matters and it is really matter of luck.
@2KGP..You are right.....some people dont want to hear the truth....The boss was only trying to be nice...his/her own job will be on the line in 2016 ...bet on it.... My old boss ,who riffed me via a speaker phone / conference call , said to let him know if I wanted him to look around for me to come back as a consultant ...REALLY????

It is 6 months.. But you will not be hired back. You will need to have someone want you to come back and they work to do so.

6 months and no option to repay severance, no option to come back early. Although I don't know why you would want to come back to this sinking ship :)
