Why are people being offered unpaid time off so early in the year? Very weird

I agree 100% with the prior post. I retired from AT&T as an Executive Director during 03/13. I couldn't wait to leave for all of the usual reasons. I carefully planned my exit strategy over the prior two years. My partner and I started a new business. I can't tell you how much better I feel now. Instead of playing the political games, wasting time on pretty looking Power Points with phony numbers, and, in general, running interference and saying everything is fine instead of actually fixing problems, I now add value for my clients and solve real business problems for them. It was much easier to start the business than I expected and I am now making more $'s than I did at AT&T even though this was not my primary motivation. Have faith in yourself and your abilities no matter what AT&T tells you, plan your exit carefully on company time, and you too will feel less stress, greater self worth, more job satisfaction, and maybe even greater income than what AT&T gave you.

It is a shame. But there are many people including myself who landed on their feet better. I added 30k to my six fig salary. And did it in under 4 weeks. I say this to say if you focus on the positives, this situation can be a blessing in disguise.

Can you imagine having a surplus event (and there will be one in Np&E/ATO) 3q or 4q and needing to look for a job around the holidays. Or how about months after that having to do a job of 3-4 people. Or dealing /working with those folks who don't know how to handle stress and loss - and act out in ways that try to sabatoge your work and reputation.

Everything works out in the end. EVERYTHING. But the pity party has to stop. It happened. It wasn't fair. In most cases this go around it WAS personal. But Im excited to work on some cutting edge initiatives at a company that knows how to control its expenses, innovates. You never read of found pension money or other creative accounting practices. And their layoff board has been virtually dead for years.

there's something better on the other side of this folks. Just open your eyes. Count your blessings. And get moving.

True, another company will hire you if AT&T lays you off. However it is a darn shame you are put in that position after working hard and being a dedicated employee for years. AT&T does not value or appreciate their employees or customers for that matter.

This H1B boogie man is ridiculous. Yes, some regulation is required there, but no one is plotting against how to take your job away from you. Just get better at it; become better educated; learn some new skills; anything. If you have skills the market needs and AT&T lays you off, you'll find something better..

It's not going to stop unfortunately. Americans will keep getting screwed. No matter who you elect, it will not stop. The only protection is education. You have to keep learning and expending your skill sets. Companies are now looking for generalist who are well versed in many aspects of Technology and business. See you can find someone overseas to code, but it is hard to find someone overseas who knows the companies business and ethnology and can speak to any level of management. Knowledge is power.

Time off? Why others turning a deaf ear to outsourcing? If you supports in any way technology Specifically, your job is at risk due to H1b and L1 visas,

And… The media consistently does!! It’s not only me. I hear this at work, at lunch and people feel like they have to walk on egg shells and are afraid to bring it up!! This is pathetic!!

Some say to just get used to it. That’s the way it is. Many, many Americans feel screwed and stabbed in the back by US companies, politicians, immigration lawyers and powerful lobbyists. When is this screwing going to STOP??!!

Most people wouldn't. Here's a hypothetical situation where you might though. Just got your bonus and don't have immediate plans for it so you could take a day or two off right now without pay and save your vacation days to use later in the year when you won't have that extra money laying around to cover you. Or if you knew you had something big coming up later in the year like a birth and wanted to ensure you still had paid days available. But no, it's very unlikely there would be any extra incentive from AT&T to do it.

Im confused as to why anyone would sign up for this. If you have say 20 days....you just raise your hand for time off (and your paycheck docked) for offering up?

Do you get a check mark in your leadership's book on kind hear-ted spirited employees who care about the bottom line? Are you spared from the next layoff??

Like what is the incentive. Not trying to be sarcastic - just a genuine question.

You'll begin to see e-time or unpaid time off occurring more and more. This has a direct correlation to automation efforts the company has been working on since 2008.

Very constrained expense budgets this year. Unpaid time off would offer some budget relief as wages and salaries come out of departmental expense budgets.
