Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Sorry union folks, you are f---ed!

As an outside observer merely here for a curiosity/educational experience I would just like to say to all VZ union members: Sorry but you are f---ed. I have no skin in this game and no matter how it turns out it will not affect me in the least.

I guarantee Verizon was plotting and planning for this contract before the ink was dry on the last one. The leadership is not stupid; they run a business that racks up a 1+ billion profit a month. They have you where they want you, between a rock a nd a hard place.

If you strike they have a contingency plan in place. While the managers will not be able to the job as well as somebody with experience they will get enough done. Contractors will be brought on to fill the holes (btw as I have seen some members post, they are not sitting in hotels somewhere waiting for the call wasting money. They will be activated when the need arises.) If you don’t strike you are not costing the company any more money then you currently do and since you are not under a contract you have even given up some right (i.e. grievances). They are still making a ton of money each month.

The fact of the matter is this is purely an economic decision. With all of your bargained rights you are very expensive. You can be replaced by contractors and outsourcing at a cheaper rate. Hence is makes sense for the company go that route. The amount of current profit is irrelevant, only maximizing profit is what matters.

Your union leadership knows this, they know you are not going to get a contract near the one you have now. They make you wear red, black, walk on informational pickets and quite frankly it means nothing. You have been working without a contract for quite a while and the profits have not gone down. Union leadership will say look at all we did to try to make it look like they are doing something. Doesn’t matter, the company has not budged. You will get a shit contract. The union leadership will say we did all we could do. Too little too late. You should have been going to the PSCs years ago. By the time the government gets off its ass and forces the company to do something this contract will be settled and signed. It will take years for the PSC to force the company to do something. The company planned and plotted, they anticipated every move the union would do and they were ready for it. The union leadership sat on their ass.

VZ is a business and sad to say the union is now too. However the union is screwing you worse than the company. At least the company is paying you at this point. The union is just taking your money. You are their customers; you pay them every month for service. They don’t want to spend a penny of your hard earned money they are taking. VZ puts ads in the paper saying how great they are, haven’t seen a union one yet. They use “free” labor to get their word out, you! Guess what, it is not working. Look at Verizon’s profits. The union part of the business is icing on the cake when it comes to profits, the wireless side far outweighs the landline side. The landline side could go in the red and the company would use that to its advantage over the union folks.

But we run the fiber for the cell towers is a big union argument. Guess what? They get can contractors to do it cheaper. It is not what have you done for me lately; it is what can you do for me now.

Sorry folks but you are f---ed.

The one who thinks he knows union skin takes an extra shower every day. As salty and as buttery as popcorn. He then seeks the solace of the shower head, polishing it until it shines. When he is not posting here of course......

Think you got under the Unions skin there.

The union thinks Management can 0, well, I would like to see one of these trolls come close to my job.

I do not have an EWA, but if I did, I could hold my own.

Not as well, as they, do, but by the time contractors are called in, I would be fine.

If you strike, you lose.

Sorry Charlie.

Larry Cohen. Total comp yearly 200k. Yes to do what? Chris and Ed both 150k a year. Again for what? Talk about being lever paid management. We bitch and complain about the company we work for and these executives making money but have we look at our own Union? Is this where our dues have been going to these baboons to keep playing nice with the company. Get a move on and earn your keep. We voted to move to a strike and so far they still get paid to ignore us. Our union has turned into another greedy company looking out for themselves. Think about it? Why have they not called it? Time to grow a pair and ask these questions. I know I have tried just to get ignored or shut down. Lets stand together and and why we haven't walked yet. If not we need to vote someone in who will make a diff.

This post is all nervous rubbish. Just like the empty promises from the verizon ceo to investors in the last 24 months. Verizon uppers management did have a plan. It didn't work. There is no buyer for the rest of the wireleine now. The clock is ticking for the verizon ceo. The game is drawing to a close and a new ceo needs to be chosen soon. The blame does not lie with the "wireline" side of the business or the " unionized workers" in the business. There is a cost to doing business in any business. Verizon could support it's current workforce. However, the current ceo made a sizeable list of things he would change at verizon and he spelled out the financial gain that would occur for investors by mid year 2016. Largely blaming the " failing" wired or wireline side of the business. Laying a path to eliminate that side of the business and wildly increasing margins and profit on the other business fronts and subsidiaries.

You see the failures at verizon are multiple and can all be connected back to the failures of senior management, and ultimately the ceo. The investors will be demanding change soon. And not less pay for workers and not less vacation time for workers etc etc, Thats all cost of business stuff that is the responsibility of senior management to negotiate, it nothing new despite the propoganda being sold to the workers.

We will be demaning the ceo and more step down. Tick tock, tick tock.

The contractor argument demonstrates the level of short term memory we're dealing with. BACCSI anyone? I think Core techs were dispatched to straighten out 80% of what those guys did.

I love it, they are going to sell it off. If you want to sell something don't you need a buyer, I guess not in the world some live in. Do you think buyers see the states taking VZ to task over the condition of the plant? I understand we are a company of spin, but I can't wait to see them pull this one off.

Talk about idiots, re-read your own post, Your argument could be used for every working person from ceo's down, saying nobody is worth that much. Idiot.

Well put I agree with what you're saying in with the argument everybody is saying you need wireline to support wireless which is correct you do need Weiland is a put wireless what do we need all these idiots taking phone calls making $35 an hour no. The point that he's trying to make that I see is that the business Can sell wireline off like we have done in other states and still have a thriving wireless system. The company yes will lose customers because of the weight because managers have not had the years of experience that the union members have bit been doing the job. I understand that the union members are experienced in hard-working however from an outsider looking in only thing we see is people asking for more more money in a paying health insurance. Look at the real world people are not making $35 or more in getting pensions with almost all the help get being paid for it doesn't exist you need to realize that the company make a profit doesn't mean that you are going to get all the same profit sharing that the executives in the stockholders do. Look at some of the other profitable companies like Disney do you think all the employees get paid big bucks wrong. I won't be surprised if after this strike the company sells off wireline and says enough is enough we don't need the high paid union work is supporting the wireline contractors can do the work and yes they don't have the experience would eventually they'll do it. 5 g isthe future, streaming content to your phone tablet and tv is now. It's like you look at the old shops on Main Street now no longer there like the shoe cobbler is no longer needed we have a mom that we moving forward thank you for your services that you have done for laying down the foundation of what we truly enjoy what we have done enough and when ready to move forward without you good luck

Yes, I'm here too merely out of curiosity/educational experience. I stumble across this when i was looking for men's leather pants. You do certainly have alot to say for someone who is an outsider and not really concerned. But whatever you did catch my eye with someone getting F---ed.

Coming from the management side I can tell you, not one manager I know can do a Fios install. I have Fios techs and I could maybe work through it, but it would be all day. The company should stop advertising Fios if the union walks. Customers would wait a very long time to satisfy their service order. Back in the day a manager was a splicer, installer, or lineman. Not one manager I know was a Fios tech, which is the bulk of our work.

Stay on the outside, you are clueless. I stopped reading after "managers will get enough done and contractors will fill the holes". It's clear you have zero idea what goes on here. Most, not all, managers can't and won't do our job. Do you understand the workload here. A big issue in this round of bargaining is forced OT. Go comment on a cooking forum, you can cook right?

If we're f---ked then so are all our children/grandchildren. Minimum wage jobs with no benefits for all. The funny thing is you seem kinda happy about it. Hmmm? The working class better find out about ALEC, The Chamber of Commerce, and all the other lobbyists at work that get them to go against their own best interests.
