Why is Verizon leaving a $500 million subsidy on the table with the NY state Broadband For All program? The state is willing to subsidize 500 million dollars towards a buildout to give all NYers broadband , yet Verizon is not interested. I don't understand this.

Sure, they could get $500M in subsidies but it would cost much more than that to design and deploy. Why put good money after bad? FiOS is destined to find itself in some other company's asset column soon. They're not investing in it. Yet everywhere I go I see VZ contractors laying more and more fiber capacity to wireless sites. Curious... Clearly the company is willing to make investments in things they value long term. Verizon's core business and revenue engine has been wireless for years. Landline posted losses year after year. That was likely due more to losses in the traditional copper customers than it was to the lackluster adoption and market share of their FiOS product but losses are losses. There's no reason to invest in fiber to premise anymore. Dropping it and converting it to a wireless service serves several ends. First, they don't have to maintain thousands of miles of fiber running through residential areas anymore and can focus on the backbone of the fiber network and a much more limited number of cellular site on a national, not regional, level. Second, they don't have to mess with local and municipal licensing arrangements. Third, they don't have to send out techs to wire up households and pay them a premium for it. Instead, they could just drop ship the STB's and router which self activate once they're powered up. And last, they don't have to deal with the union and can get away with paying their domestic employees less while improving their ability to outsource internationally. Look, I'm not a union hater but the writing is on the wall.

Verizon is not interested in ANYTHING wireline. It's all about the mythical allure of 5g and millenial garbage lime Go90.
Problem is, wireless is such a commonplace commody now, everyone is getting into the wireless business as an MVNO lime Google and probably Apple soon.
So Verizon shuns wireline, and is getting Shunned by wireless. Great strategy Shamwow and McDumb@ss!
Rural Internet access would require DSL, and vz is done with that technology. Worse dsl would require Union techs to maintain and repair. Lowell would rather stick toothpicks under his finger nails than agree to that.

VZ is greedy, not dumb. That won't touch that offer. That would drag them backwards towards social responsibility by providing Internet access to rural areas. What the hell does a bunch of country hicks have to offer vz? Exactly, NOTHING...........NOTHING. Surely NO ONE on this blog site doubts VZs greed? All consuming, relentless, voracious greed. That $500 million is a pair of financial handcuffs, and you think vz doesn't already know that? ROFLMAO it knows. As Surely as God made little green apples that $500 million is a Piece of cheese baited onto a rat trap.
McAdam would take it if he could use it for wireless. Building out wireline broadband means union employment, no thanks says our leader.
