The Union seems hell bent on bringing the company down which makes no sense to me unless they are planning to work somewhere else. Pressure I could understand but it seems to go beyond that.

This is the swan song of the unions.
The more the revenue drops during this time the better legal opportunity Verizon has to lay off more union workers and not budge in negotiations. So the only real loser right now are the union people.
With that said, the union people sound so unhappy that you would think they'd go work somewhere else. Why would anyone who thinks they aren't paid enough and hates their working conditions stay at that company? That's what I don't understand. If you're unhappy stop bitching and go find another job.

They've made several offers in the last 10 months and the union rejected all of them. So clearly Verizon is not a place that is a good fit for these people.
Now Verizon is likely just taking the legal opportunity assist the union people who are so disgruntled an opportunity to find a new employer. A few more weeks and the company can start hiring replacements while the former employees can find new jobs that they are happier with. Win/Win for everyone.
I don't think Verizon looks at it as doing something to themselves. I think they look at it as the necessary process to they have to go through to get rid of unhappy employees.

Verizon is not to smart! They need to come to the table and Bargain in good faith and gives us a fair contract! We have waited 10 months!!! Verizon did this to themselves.
If they hate the company so much then why don't they go work somewhere else like normal people do? Why would any idiot stay at a company that treats them as badly as the union says Verizon does?
