Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Outsourcing - Sure, it can happen

One of our friends is on strike this morning. Verizon laid off 8,000 workers last year and went and hired 6,000 in India for IT and customer services. Many often think of phone, internet and cable as being safe jobs that cant be outsourced, but they sure can and did.

So if union employee loses that. What do you think non union will lose? I bet alot more cause the trend is take away little from non union then take away from union then do it again

op, vmg.............where did you go? Cat got your typing tongue? By the way, shouldn't you be working. By the way, after my picket duty today, I decided to open the pool and work on my tan. Oooop's sorry, gotta run, school bus is out front dropping my kids off at home from school. When exactly was the last time you got to see your children? You my friend are on the wrong side of the battlefield.

And so there is no confusion, my premium is $87 every paycheck. For the challenged thats $348 a month or $4176 a year. What you want me to pay even more for the crappy insurance that i cant get time off to use it?

Guess you got your facts from verygreedy propaganda machine. In now way did i ever even make close to that number of 130k or know of any of fellow employees that do. Pension? Yes. Paid for by previous contracts that favored it over raises. Healthcare? Yes i do pay a premium as well as $25 everytime i go see a dr +10% of the bill that is not covered. Again. FACTS!!

And in no other parts of the world do cable splicers get paid $130k per year with full pension and free healthcare. Sorry, but it works both ways.

In our country, movie stars and CEOs get paid lots of money because that's what the market demands and we are a free market country. If you don't like it you could move to Russia and see if you like it there better.

pvs........again, do some research. In no other country within the free world do CEO's and executives earn 200-400 times the wages of the average employee. You are part of the problem. By the way, not everyone who has a degree wants to be the next big CEO.

Maybe if you had a degree and/or were smarter you could be a CEO or President or CFO. Fortune 500 CEOs make a lot of money -- that's the market for them.

Don't be mad at them for getting paid what the market provides just because your choices in life led you to have a lower paying job.

No, what contributed to the jobs going away is that the business is changing and has been for the past 15 years or more. When products/services start becoming obsolete and/or commodities, their price goes down and that leads to different needs for the business which leads to layoffs.

What makes layoffs happen even faster is when the company has to pay way too many people to work in a diminishing business like wireline. A big reason the wireline business is in such bad shape is the fix costs due to the unions. It's not unlike all the airlines that have gone under because of the unions.

Sorry to break your bubble but the "American Greed" contributed to the jobs going away. Or it was teh low cost of the labor in India that contributed.

Unions and laws are only slowing the pace of job losses. If these were not around you can bet that the C level folks would have already shipped all the jobs to lower costs nations and given themselves a big fat bonus for "cost savings" and "increased profitability".

We all understand that the wireline business is changing and we need to reduce costs but ask this question... How much money have we cut on total executive compensation? I dont think we have fewer VPs and above from 10 years ago. If anything we have more people in those positions making more money than the year before. SO lets all stop drinking the KoolAid coz the axe always falls on the union or lower level management folks.

Union costs most definitely contribute to non-union RIFs. Where do you think the money comes from to fund all the benefits that non-union employees don't get comes from? I hate to tell you this, but free healthcare is not free -- someone has to pay for it.

The mass layoff was 1/2 wireless, non unon and 1/2 management wireline. There weren't any union employees laid off.

@qln, you jerk off, those layoffs were all non-union wireless workers. Let me guess, now the union is also responsible for non-union jobs as well. Total tool!

I can't help but think the antiquated union rules and demands contributed greatly to this exodus of jobs.
