Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

I have always agreed with the idea, "there is nothing so unequal as the equal treatment of unequal people."

Unions, by their very nature, are opposed to this idea. For you who support unions for skilled labor. Can you, without using explosives and name calling, help me understand your position?

@-uhl.....some of the 8000 rif'd employees were extremely hard working people that were top of thier departments as far as productivity and all other measurements!! Yet they were let go for no valid reason at all. Perhaps you non union personnel should stop being envious of benefits earned by contractual union/company agreements , and seek a way for your selves to enjoy the same.. I wish I was still union in this cut throat company...i however don't take my frustrations out on those that may have it better than me

uhl...............here we go again! Please stop making yourself look so ill informed. For the thousandth's time, we DO NOT get free healthcare. Pensions, well nobody gets those. Oh, really? How about just about everyone who works for the U.S. Government, teachers, etc.,etc.,etc. Oh, and job security, nobody gets that either. It's otherwise known as a guaranteed contract and many do receive them as well.

If you the unions think everyone should be treated the same then why are they on strike for pensions (which the rest of VZ doesn't get) and free healthcare (which the rest of VZ doesn't get). And contracted job security (which no one gets -- you have to work hard and be valuable to a company to keep your job).

ith - I don't know anywhere, Union or not, where everyone gets the same pay unless you're talking entry level. We may all start at the same wage, but if I am more productive, I deserve a better wage. The Union would say differently. This is why productivity suffers under union and socialist type environments. I remember my time in a union warehouse and all the loafing once people got into the union. I'm not saying that's how it is here, but the union rules promote that type of thing.

iuc, so what your saying is if there was no union no employees should be paid the same for doing the same job? In the armed forces ,in manufacturing , or air traffic controllers, transit, etc..... I can go on and on, that is not realistic?

Wow. Go read the Constitution. The Constitution guarantees equal treatment to all under law, not via employer.

What the OP means is that accountants and wire splicers don't get paid the same wage. Nor do CEOs and technicians.

Every position has a value to a corporation, and they are vastly dependent based on the skills and education required to do the job, as well as market value.

The union seems to think everyone should be paid equally, and that isn't realistic.

We've always had a caste system in the US. We have workers and owners. Why do workers think that they are entitled to anything more than a paycheck?

@oka if you've worked yourself into a position where you don't have marketable skills then, to borrow a rpg phrase, you've gimped your character and need to reroll. In this case get education and training to make yourself more marketable.

"We work very hard, for a company that makes huge profits, therefore, we ask to keep enjoying what we have."

Employees are not ordinarily entitled to be paid on a percentage of profits basis. Employees do not fund the company. Shareholders do. Shareholders are entitled to the profits. Employees, including execs, are only entitled to what the shareholders "have to" pay employees, and what they "have to" pay is ordinarily only determined by the labor market. If union employees can create enough leverage to alter this otherwise ordinary reality, then union employees will be paid on percentage of profits basis. If not then not. Skip the morality argument. When it comes to economics, there is no certainty on what is moral, only endless arguments about it. Economics is, and logically has to be, driven by leverage, whether we want that to be so or not.

From my point of view, if you have spent a great deal of effort gaining the skills needed for a specialized type of highly skilled employment that doesn't translate well to other companies/industries, you ought to have some sort of protection from the company trying to use that against you (i.e., company says leave if you don't like your pay cut, fully knowing you can't). If your experience and training is in fact valuable to the company, then this can be a Win-Win for you and them.

However, in my view that applies to high skill jobs. When you're talking lower skilled jobs that are much easier for someone to step into with some training and that can translate fairly decently to other companies and industries, I believe those sorts of protections only serve you and not the company and are inherently inefficient and detrimental to the company.

Man,

You must have hit a nerve there.

What is meant by unequal?

Well, lets start with how productive each person is.

How many tickets can they do, how many calls can they handle, etc.

On the other side, how much code can they develop, how good a manager are they.

No one is equal, we are all unique.

That that mean, we should be treaded different,

in some ways, yes, in a lot of ways no.

Think about it.

op you must work really hard at being unequal, that can't be a natural trait. Nobody who is so unequal can be that equal, unless of course the equality you speak about is due to the inequality of your brain to understand how equally in nature unequality can be . yadda yadda yadda

So then why does Verizon have such a loser lack-of-leadership team that never gets it right, but always manages takes down a bundle of cash?

So much for pay for performance at Verizon!

It always amazes me when the peons or middle class of the world stand-up the rich. Do you think Lowell views you as equal? Reach around your back, scratch your behind and see if you detect the odor of Vaseline and curry. Yep, you are just Pass-Around-Patty for the execs

We work very hard, for a company that makes huge profits, therefore, we ask to keep enjoying what we have.

(By the way, YES we are thankful that the company is profitable and contribute a great deal to the achievement of that profit despite the "numbers" that the company puts on paper.)
