Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

If VZ Execs are as greedy as union insists they are, wouldn't striking provide those execs with just the opp they were presumably hoping for?

Wouldn't walking off of the job increase the chances of a subsequent and permanent lock-out and wholesale replacement of the union being upheld as legal? If so, wouldn't greedy execs find that option too irresistable for them to pass up? If those execs could replace 40,000 unioners--each making, say, $130K per year in total comp, with 40,000 non-unioners each willing to take, say, only $90k per year in total comp, that would be a new, annual savings to Verizon, or increase in annual profits for Verizon of $1.6 Billion. And might not those execs further believe that perhaps they could get by with only replacing 30,000 instead of all 40,000? If so, then the annual savings, or increase in annual profits, jumps from $1.6B to an even more irresistable $2.5 Billion. Be careful, unioners. If your perspective on the execs is right, consider whether you are logically playing right into their hands. Perhaps you are betting that such a wholesale replacement is simply not operationally possible. Perhaps you are sure about that. You better be.

Even at $800 a head then we're talking over $30 million per year in dues to the union from our shops. Trust me that the union execs don't want to lose that contribution to their retirement.

They would hire mostly 40K retards. The phone company did have entrance exams that many people failed because they weren't cut out for it and many of these skills take years to master and learn. It's not like a factory where a guy puts one gear in a socket all day when we're dealing with complex troubleshooting tasks that are precarious since many customers ride on the lines. It is a nice fantasy for upper management to dream about though.

Do you have any idea how long it would take for Verizon to train a work force to replace 40,000 already experienced workers? I'm guessing not overnight like your post seems to dismiss as easy. I'm guessing months to even get going, and years to get up to speed. Do you really think Wall Street, and Verizon shareholders, and investors are going to sit idly by and wait for Lowell McAdams experiment. This nut job Lowell must go. There's no reason Verizon should have striking workers.

Good points. But then you have to balance this against the union execs who are getting the 40,000 sets of union dues. At $200/mo, that's nearly 100 million bucks per year they'd be giving up. No, they have every incentive to have their people strike. And even if the union has to pay out some comp, they still come out way ahead over a 4 or 5 year contract period. More money for them to squirrel away in Panama or wherever they do their business.
