Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Why does the union deserve a better contract?

Honest answers only please. I've heard things like "we built this company" and "they owe it to us", but I haven't seen any other real answers.

I've been with the company for 20 years now and know of a great number of people who have "Built the Company" but who don't have the same expectations that the union as a whole does.

Lets be honest.. We've all worked hard to make the company what it is today and most of us are quite proud of that fact. Reading this board you'd think that the company is so hated by the union that if they're allowed back at work that all the union members will be working hard to destroy the company. I understand that during a strike emotions are high and the rhetoric is deep but I can't shake the feeling that there is some truth to the hate for the company here.

The company has treated you well for a number of years and instead of dumping you to the curb while the copper network died, it gave you another job. Fios. But back to the question.. Why do you deserve a contract that has benefits better than most of the rest of the company? Yes, you generate income but it's just a small fraction of what the rest of the company pulls in.

Better? The union is striking to keep what they have, not asking for more. You are sadly misinformed.

If verizon was a decent place there wouldnt be thousands of posts and blogs and websites about what a horrible toxic hell hole it is . If you dont think that it is the most vile terrible place on the planet then you dont work here or know someone who works here

As a former employee who worked for VZ for 30 years I decided to leave ...I was disgusted with Verizons lack of integrity towards their employees. The last 15 years of my career the enviornment was pure poison. I have been relocated twice to avoid layoff. The company took away my retirement heathcare 20 years into my career. I have watched my bonuses and raises dwindle although I have maintained perfect performance throughout my entire 30 year career. I have witnessed excessive pay discriminaion, GTE nepotism, and worked for many incompetent managers and directors . I have witnessed talented peers layed off or forced to quit because they didnt want to move and disrupt their famalies all to save a buck. The reason employees are so angry is because this company is very very profitable..so why is VZ laying off employees , outsourcing jobs, and cutting beniifits..so Lowell and his peers can make more money? The execs are grossly over paid and have been for years!. Anyone with 20 plus years built this company, landline and wireless side, we deserve to be treated with respect and be allowed to finish our careers if you continue to be a productive contributor. VZ should honor commitments of former companies and grandfather benifits that were promised. Employees should not be targeted and harassed due to our age/ gender/ or salary. I was not a union employee but I stand behind them. I know what this company is capable of......and if you think you are immune think again!

hwz ... how many sewer rooters have you had come to your home? Obviously, they didn't do it right the first time. If you would have paid for better service, your house wouldn't be full of sh!t.

Hub " On any given day technicians have to deal with cancer causing materials such as lead cable or asbestos, electrocution hazards in the home and on the pole, animal contact such as dogs, bees, tics, roaches and bear, health hazards such as manhole gases or feces covered hovels, and all manner of weather conditions from sub-zero to above 100 degrees."

I hate to say, the sewer rooter that comes to my home encounters similar hazards. They are humble and they don't get any sort of premium or hazard pay for working in a tough environment. I think you other points have some merit, just not this one.

"union workers are the reason"

You need to take a few more courses in reading comprehension. The only reference I see is that union workers "contribute" to "record profits." I don't see where anyone said they are the end all be all of keeping this company afloat. Their line of business is profitable. Where is the justification for demanding severe cuts to the previous contract?

"Yeah, you guys help us make money. But, we want more money. "

Be thankful you have a job. Take a look at the ongoing surplusses at AT&T. I'm sure many of those surplussed employees would be glad to walk on and do your job. If you don't like your job, the salary or benefits offered look for another job. Companies don't owe you anything.

"FiOS in the Northeast is an unprofitable turd"

Then why did they just make a big deal out of the Boston build? If it's such a drag on the company, someone needs to answer for negotiating this deal.

I'm laughing out loud at the person who said the union workers are the reason Verizon currently has record profits.

I can assure you that Verizon has record profits IN SPITE OF the overpaid union which works in the one business unit that is a drag on the company's overall financials.

The people who actually do contribute to those record profits don't get any of the benefits that the union is asking for.

This whole thing is akin to a billionaire having his 38 year old son who lives in the basement for free demand money while the other siblings who live on their own pay are out supporting themselves by working 70 hours a week in the family business.

FiOS in the Northeast is an unprofitable turd- a $30 billion dollar black-eye with an incredibly expensive workforce. Don't know of any management team in this day and age that will step into a Board room and boast that they agreed to a contract that will almost certainly continue to generate negative cash flow. With over the top internet threatening traditional pay TV models, this is a bigger threat to FIOS revenues. If revenues are not growing and expenses keep creeping up, the business is not sustainable. So, why does the Union deserve a better contract? They really don't, but you can't just start taking everything away. Sorry, I feel the pension needs to be one of the concessions this time around. And, productivity measurements are needed and should be tied to a part of their overall compensation, just like most other American workers today. Finally, the old copper guys need to get a package and retire. This would end the tiring commentary around maintaining the copper network for VZ customers. That stuff needs to be decommissioned at this point. R

You asked two different questions in your post. First, you asked why we deserve a better contract. That is not what we're asking for. We are asking that at a time when our efforts contribute to record profits (and wireline is posting increased profits as of last quarter) that our livelihoods not be destroyed by shipping jobs overseas (like they have done with other parts of the company) or disrupted by reducing quality of life by moving employees away from their families or asking that we take a financial loss. This is not about gains.

Is this really an unreasonable request?

You follow this up by asking why we deserve better benefits than the rest of the company. And, I will respond that we do NOT deserve BETTER benefits. I think yours should be raised to our level. Unfortunately, your company will do everything in their power to prevent you from getting them. How is that the union worker's fault?

The final point I will address, and this focuses on the outside technicians, is that there are few positions in this company that involve true physical risk. On any given day technicians have to deal with cancer causing materials such as lead cable or asbestos, electrocution hazards in the home and on the pole, animal contact such as dogs, bees, tics, roaches and bear, health hazards such as manhole gases or feces covered hovels, and all manner of weather conditions from sub-zero to above 100 degrees.

With that said, I'll ask you to look at what you do and ask yourselves why YOU don't deserve better benefits.

Or do you?

@car So because a company makes profit they're greedy? It's a good thing you're not in charge.

You have no idea of the financials of the wireline. No idea. As a person who used to work there and now have to deal with them thru my new job. I see how much they charge other companies just to do business like leasing duct space in a manhole or how much they charge so i can access my own network in verizon manhole that i already paid licensing to this greedy company

What McAdam and his crew is accused of is not new. There has been instances before, one example is the company Sunbeam. Ran stock price up short term, generated too much debt and company crashed. CEO and his minions made out like fat cats with their Golden Parachutes. That crew was called in to do just that.Ran it like a bank heist.

Obviously that can't be answered. They are just trying to hold on. Heck, I'd do the same thing if I was in the union. They can't win at this point - The buggy building business is dead.

Um..... verizon did "DUMP" me and 44 others. Probably to pay for that hideous name rebrand. As matter fact not only did they dump me, they forced the ramaining to a mandatory 12 hrs 7 day work week.

why does the jackass that runs place feel he should get paid more than every one else to the tune of 18 million and 37 million gold parachute? what exactly does he do to get paid that kind of money, maybe you should try to crawl around a sewer like I use to do and see how much fun it is. if jackass had his way we would all get paid less than you that's why we have a union.

We bring in 3x our operating budget. Where is that not a good investment? The profits deserve a better split anyways.
