Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Union (and non-union) workers are not primarily at war with VZ but rather are primarily at war with the laws of supply and demand.

When your total comp inclusive of benefits reaches the point where you earn 40-50% more than non-union market, the laws of supply and demand themselves say that you "deserve" to lose your job to a non-union replacement from the market. Same laws apply to management and non-union non-management workers, as well. The laws of supply and demand always eventually win any battle; one reason for that is that those laws actually benefit someone else beyond both the company and the current workers; that someone else is another very large class of workers other than the existing workers; that someone else is a very large class of current non-workers who are willing to do the same work, and are willing to try to do it as well as the existing workers, for 40 or 50% less total comp. And that other class of current non-workers matter--in the eyes of the laws of supply and demand--as much as we existing union and non-union current workers matter. We have no special entitlement compared to those current non-workers (at least not to the extent that those current non-workers are U.S. citizens, i.e., are not foreigners to whom a company is outsourcing our jobs to). And we can't argue unfairness; that class of current U.S. non-workers has a fairness expectation, too; they expect to be able to compete for, and to be able to take jobs from, existing workers, if they are willing to do the same job, and do it as well, for 40-50% less. In all of history, there have never been enough jobs to guarantee a job to everyone who wants one, let alone guarantee it to them at the comp level they personally believe is "fair." And there never will be. The laws of supply and demand ultimately decide who will work, for how long, and at what comp.

I think what is being said is that the anger and hatred eminating from union posts and replies are almost palpable and come across as uneducated. I don't see that from the scabs, sometimes from management replies, but not nearly as virulent and always in response to a cuss word littered union post. One person told a lady to get an abortion since she was a scab. Who does that? Times have changed and that kind of behavior is not thought of favorably. It is especially disturbing in large groups.

oir I hope you understand that you will likely end up as "1 of the 5". Everyone at Verizon is always going to school to add something to their resume, but guess what? 20% still got burned through Feb 2016, and there will be another 20% burned by the end of the year.

Want to know the uneducated? They are the ones hurling curse words.."yeah? Well you are ugly." Seems to come mostly from union folks. Unions had a place, a hundred years ago but when you have to reach back a hundred years to make a point, then cuss at folks you prove to the educated what they educated already know: you are the uneducated dinosaur in a dinosaur job and grasping at straws. Even more embarrassing, many in your ranks appear to be supporting the socialist Sanders and in the same breath speak how UN-American VZ is. Problem is I don't remember socialism being American but you are willing to make America socialist for what..more money. Lots of cliches come to mind..pot calling kettle black...1 finger pointing, the other 4 fingers point back...

I worked the land side, saw the inevitable, schooled myself in wireless and am working which is much better than blaming everyone else. The point is it is and always will be my choice to stay or go so go get educated, find a better job and quit crying.

Hey fah. If you didnt get the jist of what fda was saying about what it was like for immigrants or anyone in general before there were unions, then surely you cut history class to much in high school. Or is it possible you didnt make it through high school and you are the uneducated one.

"Do you like living like an American?"

I think that is part of the problem. Verizon doesn't seem to like America or Americans.

Supply and demmand? There are something like 7 billion fuking people on this planet. There will always be demmand as there are people out there willing to do anything.

The unions are trying to keep this country from going back to third world standards you idiot.

Do you like living like an American? Then I would support the unions.

@GU23ByM-gda surely you do not expect us to believe that you were 'educated' at any institution of higher learning? I mean that has to be one of the more uneducated notes posted here today.

You might want to work on that before the company lays you off after the contract is finally agreed to.

Of perhaps take some ESL classes.
